A two-choice apparatus for food reward was used. Normal and visually deprived cats were trained to discriminate white and black cards. After the animals had reached criterion, the contrast difference between the cards was diminished in steps. When the brightness ratio had been reduced to 1.8, discrimination was impaired in the deprived cats and not in the normally raised cats.

Article Synopsis
  • Monitoring mortality rates in pets provides important public health insights, highlighting how diseases affect animal well-being and guiding policy decisions.
  • A study analyzed data from over 52,000 pets in the UK, revealing key findings like behavioral conditions considerably contributing to premature deaths in young dogs and a 19% higher mortality risk in certain dog breeds.
  • The research also showed a strong link between socioeconomic status and pet mortality, with impoverished areas experiencing nearly a 50% higher risk of premature death in cats and dogs, pointing to the need for addressing these disparities to improve animal health.

Gray matter volume of the feline cerebral cortex and structural plasticity following perinatal deafness.

In response to sensory deprivation, the brain adapts according to contemporary demands to efficiently navigate a modified perceptual environment. This reorganization may result in improved processing of the remaining senses-a phenomenon referred to as compensatory crossmodal plasticity. One approach to explore this neuroplasticity is to consider the macrostructural changes in neural tissue that mirror this functional optimization.

Temporal trends and factors associated with vaccination uptake in dogs and cats from 2016 to 2022 in the United Kingdom.

Vaccine

September 2024

Department of Livestock and One Health, Institute of Infection, Veterinary and Ecological Sciences, University of Liverpool, Leahurst Campus, Neston, UK. Electronic address:

Background: Vaccination of dogs and cats is considered a mainstay of preventive health, providing benefit to individual animals and the population. This study aimed to assess temporal trends in vaccination and factors associated with vaccination uptake in a large veterinary visiting population of UK cats and dogs.

Methods: The electronic health records (EHRs) of 712,266 dogs and 306,888 cats (voluntarily contributed by 201 veterinary practices) were used to determine the proportion that had record of any type of veterinary vaccination either within one-year or within three-years of attending a participating veterinary practice.

Background: Opisthorchiid flukes, particularly Opisthorchis viverrini, Opisthorchis felineus, Clonorchis sinensis, and Metorchis spp. are the most common fish-borne zoonotic human liver flukes (hLFs). Liver fluke infections are more prevalent in resource-deprived and underprivileged areas.

Neurons within a neuronal network can be grouped by bottom-up and top-down influences using synchrony in neuronal oscillations. This creates the representation of perceptual objects from sensory features. Oscillatory activity can be differentiated into stimulus-phase-locked (evoked) and non-phase-locked (induced).
