Many of the major human infectious diseases, including some now confined to humans and absent from animals, are 'new' ones that arose only after the origins of agriculture. Where did they come from? Why are they overwhelmingly of Old World origins? Here we show that answers to these questions are different for tropical and temperate diseases; for instance, in the relative importance of domestic animals and wild primates as sources. We identify five intermediate stages through which a pathogen exclusively infecting animals may become transformed into a pathogen exclusively infecting humans. We propose an initiative to resolve disputed origins of major diseases, and a global early warning system to monitor pathogens infecting individuals exposed to wild animals.

Inflammaging has long been linked to the pathogenesis of various aging-associated disorders, including cardiovascular disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and dementia. Yet, the origins of inflammaging remain unclear. Although inflammatory dermatoses such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis predispose to the development of certain aging-associated disorders, suggesting a pathogenic role of cutaneous inflammation in these disorders, the great majority of aged humans do not have inflammatory dermatoses.

The objective of this study is to implement an actionable incidental findings (AIFs) communication workflow integrated into the electronic health record (EHR) using dictation macros to improve the quality of radiology reports and facilitate delivery of findings to clinicians. The workflow was implemented across an academic multi-hospital health system and used by over 100 radiologists from 12 divisions. Standardized macros were created for different organ systems including the thyroid, lungs, liver, pancreas, spleen, kidney, female reproductive, and others, designed based on the ACR Novel Quality Measure Set.

The synaptonemal complex (SC) is a protein-rich structure essential for meiotic recombination and faithful chromosome segregation. Acting like a zipper to paired homologous chromosomes during early prophase I, the complex is a symmetrical structure where central elements are connected on two sides by the transverse filaments to the chromatin-anchoring lateral elements. Despite being found in most major eukaryotic taxa implying a deeply conserved evolutionary origin, several components of the complex exhibit unusually high rates of sequence turnover.
