Objectives: Bronchiolitis obliterans (BO) is the main cause of late mortality among long-term survivors of lung transplantation. Chemokine-chemokine receptor (CCR) interaction and subsequent recruitment of infiltrating cells to the graft are early events in the development of chronic rejection of transplanted lungs. The present study investigated whether blockade of chemokine receptors CCR1 and CCR5 with Met-regulated-on-activation, normal T cells expressed and secreted (RANTES), an amino-terminal modified derivative of RANTES/CCL5, affects the development of BO in murine model and we sought to determine the expression of RANTES/CCL5 and their relationship with extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK).
Materials And Methods: BALB/c mouse tracheas were heterotopically transplanted into C57Black6 recipients and treated for 21 days with either Met-RANTES at 20 microg/day or vehicle. Animals were killed at 21 days after transplantation for histologic examination of ERK expression.
Results: RANTES/CCL5 was highly expressed in allografts compare to isografts. Met-RANTES treatment ameliorated fibrous airway obliteration in a mouse model of BO and decreased ERK expression.
Conclusion: Blockade of chemokine receptors by Met-RANTES ameliorated airway obliteration and decreased ERK expression. These findings suggest that chemokine receptors CCR1 and CCR5 play significant roles in the development of chronic rejection and ERK may be a new molecular target for chronic rejection.

Objective: We examine pathways of airway alteration due to wall thinning, narrowing, and obliteration in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) using CT-derived airway metrics.
Methods: Ex-smokers (N = 649; age mean ± std: 69 ± 6 years; 52% male) from the COPDGene Iowa cohort (September 2013-July 2017) were studied. Total airway count (TAC), peripheral TAC beyond 7th generation (TACp), and airway wall thickness (WT) were computed from chest CT scans using previously validated automated methods.

Myhre syndrome (MS) is a rare genetic condition that presents with multiple genetic anomalies including cleft lip and palate and Eustachian tube dysfunction. These patients are at a high risk for airway scarring from intubation and mucosal inflammation. Hearing loss (conductive or mixed, of varying severity) is a common comorbidity in these patients, the exact etiology of which is still unclear.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic respiratory disease characterized by a non-reversible limitation of expiratory airflow. In patients with COPD, distal airways are the major site of obstruction; early in the course of the disease, they show signs of being remodeled, inflamed, and/or obliterated. Recent technological advances, particularly in imaging and transcriptomics, have provided new information on this key area of the lung.

Background: In this study we aimed to describe the morphological and pathogenetic differences between tracheal agenesis and tracheal atresia, which are not clearly distinguished from each other in the literature, and to contribute thereby to the understanding and management of these conditions. Both tracheal agenesis and tracheal atresia represent rare disorders of still unknown aetiology that cannot be detected by prenatal ultrasound. If the affected foetuses survive until birth these conditions result in respiratory failure and in futile attempts to rescue the infant's life.

Background: Every year 2% of pregnant women undergo nonobstetric surgical interventions worldwide. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Committee on Obstetric Practice, pregnant women should never be denied the most appropriate surgical treatment, regardless of the trimester of pregnancy. However, additional attention should be paid during the first trimester since it has the highest risk of inducing teratogenic mutations; additionally, during the third trimester, due to the possibility of preterm birth and low birth weight of the newborn, great care should be paid.
