The last 10 years have seen resurgent industry activity in discovery and development of new drugs for the treatment of tuberculosis (TB), a growing widespread and devastating (more than 2 million deaths annually) bacterial infection that is of increasing concern in developing and developed nations alike. This review describes drugs currently being evaluated in the clinic for treatment of uncomplicated and drug resistant pulmonary TB, and updates the literature on 5 new drugs that entered clinical trials in the last 4 years.

Given the uniqueness of the mitochondria, and the fact that they have their own genome, mitochondrial-derived microproteins (MDPs) are similar to, but different from, nuclear-encoded microproteins. The discovery of an increasing number of microproteins from this organelle and the importance of mitochondria to cellular and organismal health make it a priority to study this novel class of proteins in search of possible therapeutic targets and cures. In this review, we discuss the history of MDP discovery, describe the function of each MDP, and conclude with future goals and techniques to help discover more MDPs.

As a multifactorial and heterogeneous disease, cancer has a high mortality rate, and the search for more effective treatments is an enormous challenge. Metal coordination compounds open a range of possibilities that conventional organic and biological molecules can no longer fulfil due to increasing drug resistance. Although HIV infection can be managed with antiretroviral drugs, there is no cure and therapy has to be taken for life. Recent successes in animal models with HIV-specific broadly neutralising antibodies (bNAbs) have led to long-term virological remission and even possible cures in some cases.
