A statistical mechanical description of flexible and semiflexible polymer chains in a poor solvent is developed in the constant force and constant distance ensembles. We predict the existence of many intermediate states at low temperatures stabilized by the force. A unified response to pulling and compressing forces has been obtained in the constant distance ensemble. We show the signature of a crossover length which increases linearly with the chain length. Below this crossover length, the critical force of unfolding decreases with temperature, while above, it increases with temperature. For stiff chains, we report for the first time sawtoothlike behavior in the force-extension curves which has been seen earlier in the case of protein unfolding.

Purpose: The self-shielding radiosurgery system ZAP-X consists of a 3 MV linear accelerator and eight round collimators. For this system, it is a common practice to perform the reference dosimetry using the largest 25 mm diameter collimator at a source-to-axis distance (SAD) of 45 cm with the PTW Semiflex3D chamber placed at a measurement depth of 7 mm in water. Existing dosimetry protocols do not provide correction for these measurement conditions.

Dielectric profile at the Pt(111)/water interface.

The dielectric constant, although a simplified concept when considering atomic scales, enters many mean-field, electrochemical interface models and constant potential models as an important parameter. Here, we use ab initio and machine-learned molecular dynamics to scrutinize the behavior of the electronic contribution to ɛr(z) as a function of distance z from a Pt(111) surface. We show that the resulting dielectric profile can largely be explained as a sum of the metallic response and the density-scaled water response at the interface.

A new projector, Orthogonal-Distance Ray-tracer Varying-Full Width at Half Maximum (OD-RT-VF), was developed to model a shift-variant elliptical point-spread function (PSF) response to improve the image quality of a preclinical dual-rotation PET system. Approach: The OD-RT-VF projector models different FWHM values of the PSF in multiple directions, using half-height and half-width tube-of-response (ToR) values. The OD-RT-VF method's performance was evaluated against the original OD-RT method and a ToR model with constant response.

The placenta plays a critical role in nutrient and oxygen exchange during pregnancy, yet the effects of medicinal drugs on this selective barrier remain poorly understood. To overcome this, this study presents a cost-effective bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) system to assess tight junction integrity and monolayer formation in BeWo b30 cells, a widely used model of the multinucleated maternal-fetal exchange surface of the placental barrier. Cells were cultured on collagen-coated porous membranes and treated with forskolin to induce controlled syncytialization.
