The present study investigates the correlation between concentrations of drugs in human tissues and Diptera larvae feeding on these tissues. Samples of liver were taken from 18 cases in which preliminary toxicological screening indicated the presence of drugs. Blowfly larvae (Diptera: Calliphoridae) were reared on these samples and subsequently analyzed for drug content.

Hair analysis for the major metabolite of cocaine, benzoylecgonine (BZE) was performed in a cohort of 251 predominantly African-American newborns utilizing a modified radioimmunoassay (RIA) (Abuscreen Roche Laboratories, Nutley, N.J., USA).

Abuscreen OnLine assays for drugs of abuse screening in urine have recently been developed for use on Hitachi 917 analyzers (Roche Diagnostics GmbH). The assays are based on the kinetic interaction of microparticles as measured by changes in light transmission. Drug in a sample inhibits the formation of particle aggregates and diminishes absorbance change increases.

Determination of five abused drugs in nitrite-adulterated urine by immunoassays and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.

The adulteration of urine specimens with nitrite ion hasseen shown to mask the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) confirmation testing of marijuana use. This study was designed to further investigate the effect of nitrite adulteration on the detection of five commonly abused drugs by immunoassay screening and GC-MS analysis. The drugs tested are cocaine metabolite (benzoylecgonine), morphine, 11-nor-delta-tetrahydrocannabinol-9-carboxylic acid (THCCOOH), amphetamine, and phencyclidine.

This study was designed to compare results obtained from two separate on-site drug testing kits (ONTRAK TESTCUP and Abuscreen ONTRAK) with those obtained from laboratory based immunoassay and GC/MS. Abuscreen ONLINE immunoassay was used to select 250 negative samples and 100 presumptive-positive samples each for cocaine/metabolites, opiates and cannabinoids. Presumptive-positive samples were selected if the immunoassay response was > or = 300 ng/mL for cocaine/metabolites (BZE), > or = 300 ng/mL for opiates or > or = 50 ng/mL for cannabinoids (THC-COOH).
