A common unsatisfactory long-term outcome of otoplasty is undercorrection and residual deformity. Aggressive scoring with a scalpel blade can cause unattractive and painful ridging, especially in older patients with stiffer cartilage. We developed an ex vivo pig ear model to compare the effectiveness of bipolar diathermy with blade scoring for cartilage warping. Strips of cartilage harvested from Landrace pig ears were subjected to bipolar diathermy (group A), blade scoring (group B), and blade scoring combined with reverse-side bipolar diathermy (group C). The strip deflection and cartilage tension were measured for each group. No statistical difference (P

Electronic address:

Background: The common techniques used in nipple-sparing mastectomy (NSM) are hydrodissection (tumescent dissection) and electrocautery. We hypothesized that bipolar scissors (diathermy scissors) would improve surgical outcomes in mastectomy.

Methods: We prospectively compared 50 patients undergoing NSM using the bipolar scissor technique to retrospective data from patients who had previously undergone NSM with hydrodissection (n = 50) or electrocautery (n = 50).

Comparison of postoperative bleeding in pediatric tonsillectomy versus tonsillotomy.

Int J Pediatr Otorhinolaryngol

Department of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, Shaare-Zedek Medical Center, Faculty of Medicine, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel. Electronic address:

Objective: Tonsillar surgery is a common intervention for pediatric obstructive sleep apnea and recurrent tonsillitis. This study compared postoperative bleeding incidence and severity following tonsillotomy and tonsillectomy at a single medical center.

Study Design: A retrospective cohort study on 1984 pediatric patients (1-18 years old) who underwent surgery during 2004-2011 and 2019-2022.

Article Synopsis
  • * The condition was identified following a post-surgery hemorrhage that required further intervention, and there was no improvement noted within three months.
  • * A review of existing literature found 15 similar cases, suggesting that while modern surgical techniques may increase its occurrence, other factors also play a role, highlighting the importance of careful surgical practices and continued research to limit these complications. *

Introduction With the rising trends in breast cancer throughout the world, the traditional modus of intraoperative tissue dissection using a scalpel, scissors, or electrocautery needs to be re-evaluated in the wake of newer modalities, such as electrothermal bipolar vessel sealing (EBVS) devices, which may theoretically reduce the postoperative complications and morbidity in these patients. Aim and objective The objective of this study is to compare an EBVS device to electrocautery (diathermy) in modified radical mastectomy (MRM), based on selected intraoperative and postoperative outcomes. Study procedure This was a comparative cross-sectional section study that included 60 patients with operable breast cancer (stages I and II, TNM classification, and post-neoadjuvant stage III disease).
