Article Synopsis
  • * A case study of a 55-year-old man highlighted how coughing from a respiratory infection led to severe neurological symptoms and eventual carotid artery dissection.
  • * Despite initial treatment with a clot-busting medication called alteplase, the patient faced complications, emphasizing the need for proper diagnosis and management of carotid artery dissection.

Background: Acupuncture has achieved good results in the treatment of cough, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other lung diseases, but the mechanism associated with acupuncture in the treatment of chronic cough induced by lung surgery is unknown. We investigated whether acupuncture therapy could improve the symptoms of chronic cough after lung surgery through cyclic-AMp dependent protein kinase A (PKA)/cyclic-AMp dependent protein kinase C (PKC) regulation of the transient receptor potential vanilloid-1 (TRPV1) signaling pathway.

Methods: The guinea pigs were divided into 5 groups: the Sham operation Group (Sham), the Model Group (Model), the Electroacupuncture + Model Group (EA + M), the H89 + Model Group (H89 + M) and the Go6983 + Model Group (Go6983 + M).

To clarify the role of oestrogen signalling and the role of oestrogen receptor alpha (ERα) in the cough pathways we performed a study in which coughing was observed in both sexes animal models after the treatment by selective ERα degrader fulvestrant (ICI 182-780) and inhibitor of oestrogen synthesis danazol. Degradation of ERα with the normal plasma oestrogen levels induced by fulvestrant, significantly augments the cough response of female but not male guinea pigs. These changes were observed in citric acid-induced cough.

The influence of CO on spatiotemporal features of mechanically induced cough in anesthetized cats.

Effective cough requires a significant increase in lung volume used to produce the shear forces on the airway to clear aspirated material. This increase in tidal volume during cough, along with an increase in tidal frequency during bouts of paroxysmal cough produces profound hyperventilation and thus reduces arterial CO. While there are several reports in the literature regarding the effects of hypercapnia, hyperoxia, and hypoxia on cough, there is little research quantifying the effects of hypocapnia on the cough reflex.
