The selection and expression of conspicuous colorations in animals is often related to anti-predation strategies and sociosexual communication. The giant river prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man, 1879) is a species with three male morphotypes that vary in claws' coloration and the size of the animals. It has been suggested that male reproductive quality might be associated to their coloration, but evidence is still conflicting.

In socially monogamous species, sexual selection not only depends on initial mate choice but also mate switching. To date, studies lack assessment of (1) differences between passive (widowhood) and active (divorce) mate switching, (2) longer term fitness consequences (beyond the season post-divorce) and (3) how age masks reproductive costs and benefits of divorce. We investigated causes and short- and long-term consequences of mate switching and their age dependence using longitudinal data on Seychelles warblers (Acrocephalus sechellensis).

Mate availability and social information can influence mating behaviour in both males and females. Social information obtained from conspecifics can influence mate choice, particularly shown by studies on mate choice copying. However, the role of directly observing conspecific mating on mating behaviour has been less explored.

Females that mate multiply make postmating choices about which sperm fertilize their eggs (cryptic female choice); however, the male characteristics they use to make such choices remain unclear.
