The resonance assignment, secondary structure, and dynamic properties of a stable noncoiled coil conformation of the dimerization domain from yeast transcription activation factor GCN4 (Leu zipper; LZGCN4) are presented. Introduced in this paper, a new line of fully optimized spin state exchange experiments, XYEX-TROSY, applied to 1HN, 15N and 1Halpha,13Calpha moieties, established that in broad range of pH and buffer conditions the classical LZGCN4 coiled coil dimer is in a dynamic equilibrium with another distinct conformation (denoted here as x-form) and enabled complete assignment of the resonances stemming from the x-form. The LZGCN4 x-form is generally less structured in comparison with the classical GCN4-p1 coiled coil, but still retains a structured alpha-helical central core. The implications for folding properties and biological significance are discussed.

Cytochrome P450s (CYPs) are a superfamily of thiolate-ligated heme metalloenzymes principally responsible for the hydroxylation of unactivated C-H bonds. The lower-axial cysteine is an obligatory and universally conserved residue for the CYP enzyme class. Herein, we challenge this paradigm by systematically identifying non-canonical CYPs (ncCYPs) that do not harbor a cysteine ligand.

Heterojunctions (HJs) based on two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides are considered promising candidates for next-generation electronic and optoelectronic devices. Here, vertical (V-type) and lateral (L-type) HJ diodes based on metallic 1T-VSe and semiconducting 2H-WSe with out-of-plane and in-plane contacts are designed. First-principles quantum transport simulations reveal that both V- and L-type VSe/WSe HJ diodes form p-type Schottky contacts.

sp-carbon-linked covalent organic frameworks (spc-COFs) are crystalline porous polymers with repeat organic units linked by sp carbons, and have attracted increasing interest due to their robust skeleton and tunable semiconducting properties. Single-crystalline spc-COFs with well-defined structures can represent an ideal platform for investigating fundamental physics properties and device performance. However, the robust olefin bonds inhibit the reversible-reaction-based crystal self-correction, thus yielding polycrystalline or amorphous polymers.

The interconversion between singlet and triplet spin states of photogenerated radical pairs is a genuine quantum process, which can be harnessed to coherently manipulate the recombination products through a magnetic field. This control is central to such diverse fields as molecular optoelectronics, quantum sensing, quantum biology and spin chemistry, but its effect is typically fairly weak in pure molecular systems. Here we introduce hybrid radical pairs constructed from semiconductor quantum dots and organic molecules.

Luminescent gold(I) compounds have attracted intensive attention due to anticipated strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) resulting from heavy atom effect of gold atoms. However, some mononuclear gold(I) compounds are barely satisfactory. Here, we unveil that low participation of gold in transition-related orbitals, caused by 6s-π symmetry mismatch, is the cause of low SOCs in monogold(I) compounds.
