Menopause is associated with an increase in venous bicarbonate concentrations that is reversible with hormone replacement therapy (HRT). However, the mechanism underlying this effect is not known. To address this question, we studied the changes in acid-base indexes in the arterialized venous blood of normal postmenopausal women commencing conjugated equine estrogen (0.

Severe, short-term decreases in alveolar Pco2 acutely lower intraocular pressure (IOP). We wondered if less severe, physiologically relevant Pco2 reductions would also lower ocular tension and if this effect would persist in the longer term. To investigate the acute influence of small Pco2 changes on IOP, 11 healthy persons hyperventilated to reduce end-tidal Pco2 by first 10% (5 min) and then 20% (5 min).

Previous studies have shown that some patients with chronic obstructive lung disease and hypercapnia will respond to medroxyprogesterone with improvement in arterial blood gases. The exact mechanism of this effect is unclear but it is presumed to be a result of ventilatory stimulation. To determine whether the ability to correct arterial blood gas abnormalities by voluntary hyperventilation would predict a subsequent favourable response to progesterone, we studied 11 subjects with chronic obstructive lung disease and chronic hypercapnia.
