Health policies and associated research initiatives are constantly evolving and changing. In recent years, there has been a dizzying increase in research on emerging topics such as the implications of changing public and private health payment models, the global impact of pandemics, novel initiatives to tackle the persistence of health inequities, broad efforts to reduce the impact of climate change, the emergence of novel technologies such as whole-genome sequencing and artificial intelligence, and the increase in consumer-directed care. This evolution demands future-thinking research to meet the needs of policymakers in translating science into policy.

Consumer-directed Care (CDC) empowers older people to flexibly arrange services and enhances their well-being. Prior studies have suggested that limited attention and hassle costs are major demand-side barriers to using CDC. However, many other psychosocial factors were unexplored.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA high-deductible health plan (HDHP) may incentivize enrollees to limit health care use at the beginning of a plan year, when they are responsible for 100% of costs, or to increase the use of care at the end of the year, when enrollees may have less cost exposure. We investigated both the impact of the deductible reset that occurs at the beginning of a plan year and the option to enroll in an HDHP on the use of substance use disorder (SUD) treatment services over the course of a health plan year. We found decreases in SUD treatment use following the increase in cost exposure related to a deductible reset.

Overwhelmingly, older Australians (people aged 65 years and older or 50 years and older for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people) prefer to remain living in their own home rather than moving into residential care. To enable older Australians who require assistance to remain living at home, the Federal Government provides a wide range of community care services, the provision of which has increased substantially over the last 15 years. The importance of client preferences, prefaced by the introduction of consumer directed care across community aged care services, has gathered momentum in Australia following legislation in 2015.

Evidence suggests that family carers of culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) people living with dementia experience higher stress and unmet need than the general Australian population. These disparities are often framed as the result of CALD communities failing to seek formal support. Challenging this, we draw on the concept of 'structural burden' to explore how the complexity of health and aged systems contribute to the burden that CALD carers experience.
