The units of thought.

That associative processing provides the vehicle of thought is a long-standing idea. We describe here observations from cognitive neuroimaging that elucidate the neural processing that mediates this element. This account further allows a more specific ascription of a cognitive function to the brain's "default" activity in mindwandering. We extend this account to argue that one primary outcome of associative processing is the generation of predictions, which approximate the immediately relevant future and thus facilitate perception, action, and the progression of thought.

Anatomo-functional organization of insular networks:From sensory integration to behavioral control.

Prog Neurobiol

March 2025

Department of Medicine and Surgery (DIMEC), Neuroscience Unit, University of Parma, Italy. Electronic address:

Classically, the insula is considered an associative multisensory cortex where emotional awareness emerges through the integration of interoceptive and exteroceptive information, along with autonomic regulation. However, since early intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) studies, the insular cortex has also been conceived as a mosaic of anatomo-functional sectors processing various types of sensory information to generate specific overt behaviors. Based on this, the insula has been subdivided into distinct functional fields: an anterior field associated with oroalimentary behaviors, a middle field involved dorsally in hand movements and ventrally in emotional reactions, and a posterior field engaged in axial and proximal movements.

Filament-woven SF/PA gel for removing ultrafine nanoparticles and unmanageable hazardous pollutants by "all-in-one net".

J Environ Manage

March 2025

School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Guangxi University, 100 East University Road, Nanning, 530004, PR China. Electronic address:

The current state of the world's water resources is facing serious challenges, and the current water purification processes are designed for a single, more specific contaminant, with more stringent constraints, which are not suitable for emergency water treatment in stochastic environment and may cause secondary pollution. It is necessary to provide a water purification method that is convenient, easy-to-operate, one-step treatment of multiple pollutants. Herein, silk fibroin (SF) that extracted from discarded silkworm cocoons and recycled silk and phytic acid (PA) are "woven" into a network structure through hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction to form a unique gel, which could be used to remove different pollutants by "sweeping and catching" and physical adsorption.

Objectives In daily life, individuals continuously integrate motor and cognitive tasks, a process that is made possible by multisensory integration within the brain. Despite its importance, the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying the integration of stimuli from different sensory modalities remain unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate the characteristics of functional connectivity (FC) in healthy adults during a balance task with additional auditory stimuli.

Background: Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) represents a common challenge for athletes and has been a focal point of research in sports science. Eccentric exercise, known to induce DOMS, significantly impacts recovery and physiological processes. Electromagnetic stimulation, both transcranial and peripheral, has gained attention in sports medicine due to its demonstrated benefits in various conditions, offering potential as a recovery-enhancing tool for athletes.

Precipitation of gadolinium from magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents may be the Brass tacks of toxicity.

Magn Reson Imaging

March 2025

Kidney Institute of New Mexico, University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center, Albuquerque, NM, USA; New Mexico VA Health Care System, Albuquerque, NM, USA. Electronic address:

The formation of gadolinium-rich nanoparticles in multiple tissues from intravenous magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents may be the initial step in rare earth metallosis. The mechanism of gadolinium-induced diseases is poorly understood, as is how these characteristic nanoparticles are formed. Gadolinium deposition has been observed with all magnetic resonance imaging contrast agent brands.
