Weaned piglets were fed a wheat based diet either non-supplemented or supplemented with a multi-enzyme preparation or a xylanase mono-enzyme preparation, respectively. Both enzyme preparations increased live weight gain nonsignificantly, but only animals of the xylanase group showed a trend (p = 0.076) for an improved feed conversion. Only precaecal digestibility of total amino acids was improved significantly when the mono-enzyme preparation was added. Improvements of digestibility of crude fat, crude protein and starch did not reach the significance level. Both enzyme preparations reduced jejunal viscosity, however viscosity in the colon was only reduced by the mono-enzyme preparation. Both enzymes significantly reduced Lactobacillus spp. cell numbers as well as bacterial metabolites in the stomach and showed similar nonsignificant modifications in jejunum contents except for acetate in the mono-enzyme group. Total jejunal bile acids were unchanged. Compared to the control, the ratio of the main conjugated to the main deconjugated bile acid was significantly higher in the mono-enzyme group. This study has shown that the mono- and multi-enzyme preparation can lead to improved performance in wheat based diets for piglets. Like in poultry, the main mode of action seems to be the reduction of small intestinal viscosity. However, the generation of fermentable carbohydrates by the multi-enzyme preparation may mask beneficial effects on performance due to the development of an active bile acid deconjugating microbiota in the small intestine.

Accurate, specific, and cost-effective detection of toxic cyanogenic glycosides is crucial for ensuring biological health and food safety. In this study, a novel biosensor based on co-immobilized multi-enzyme system was constructed by artificial antibody-antigen-directed immobilization for the colorimetric detection of amygdalin through a cascade reaction catalyzed by β-glucosidase, glucose oxidase, and horseradish peroxidase. Artificial antibodies and antigens were prepared using catechol and 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde, respectively, to generate mutual affinity recognition ability for enzyme immobilization.

The well-defined structures of SAzymes make them well predictable by experiences and theoretical calculation. However, the effects of metal center species and coordination environments on enzyme-like activity are variable, and screening catalytic activity by artificial experiments is challenging.

A dual lipase system has been developed to convert soybean oil into biodiesel through synergistic catalysis of Thermomyces lanuginosus lipase (TLL) and Yarrowia lipolytica lipase 2 (YLL) in this study. Pichia pastoris recombinant strains expressing lipases were successfully constructed, and the activities of TLL and YLL in the fermentation supernatant reached 23,142.71 ± 280.

Cascade catalysis of glutamate oxidase (GLOX) and catalase (CAT) to perform one-pot synthetic route for α-ketoglutarate (α-KG) production offers several advantages including simplicity of operation and the generation of few reaction by-products. Nevertheless, the instability of free GLOX and CAT, the high production cost and the difficulty of recycling severely limits its industrial utilisation. Here, catalase-inorganic hybrid nanoflowers were first prepared, and cross-linked with GLOX precipitates by a macromolecular cross-linking agent dextran polyaldehyde to form a novel dual enzyme precipitation-cross-linking hybrid nanoflower (GLOX@CAT-HNFs).

Nanozymes, a category of nanomaterials with exceptional enzyme-like activity, exhibit the significant promise to overcome the inherent limitations of natural enzymes. Inspired by the active site structure of natural laccase, a biomimetic MA-Cu nanozyme with three-dimensional network structure was constructed in water system through one-step complexation based on the specific coordination between nitrogen-rich triazine heterocyclic melamine and Cu, in a facile, green and economical manner. Compared to natural laccase, MA-Cu possesses superior multi-enzyme mimicking activity, stability and cost-effectiveness.
