Vascular dementia patients show a component of their impairment as emotional. In the two studies that we present it was possible to illustrate the characteristics of such emotional component. a. The discrepancy between immediate recall and delayed recall appears to be very sensitive to anxiety interference when immediate recall is lower than delayed. b. The presence of emotional problems contributing to memory complaints in VaD patients is not equally distributed along the severity of deterioration dimension but can be identified as a specific component different from the cognitive one especially in that subgroup of patients who present an intermediate level of deterioration.

Objectives: The complex life experience of speaking two or more languages has been suggested to preserve cognition in older adulthood. This study aimed to investigate this further by examining the relationship between multilingual experience variables and cognitive functioning in a large cohort of older adults in the diversely multilingual north of the Netherlands.
Method: 11,332 older individuals participating in the Lifelines Cohort Study completed a language experience questionnaire.

The primary objective of this study was to examine neurological disorders and cognitive impairments in patients with secondary hypothyroidism and epilepsy undergoing treatment with antiepileptic medications. The study included 184 patients divided into three groups: Group 1 (subclinical hypothyroidism, n = 60), Group 2 (manifest hypothyroidism, n = 64), and Group 3 (control, n = 60). Patients in Group 2 received levothyroxine therapy (initial dose of 25 μg/day, titrated to 50-100 μg/day), while Groups 1 and 2 were treated with anti-seizure medications (valproic acid, 40 mg/kg/day).

Macrophages undergo polarization, resulting in distinct phenotypes. These transitions, including de-/repolarization, lead to hysteresis, where cells retain genetic and epigenetic signatures of previous states, influencing macrophage function. We previously identified a set of interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs) associated with high lipid levels in macrophages that exhibited hysteresis following M1 polarization, suggesting potential alterations in lipid metabolism.

Background: Ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) is an inevitable pathophysiological process during heart transplantation, and ferroptosis is an important pathogenic mechanism. Unlike other modes of cell death, ferroptosis depends on the accumulation of iron within the cell and the oxidative degradation of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Dysregulation of this pathway has been linked to the progression of multiple pathological conditions, making it an attractive target for therapeutic intervention.

Chronic alcoholism is known to have detrimental effects on the brain, including cognitive impairment, neurotransmitter imbalances, and brain atrophy. The hippocampus, crucial for spatial memory and cognitive functions, is particularly susceptible to alcohol-induced changes. Photobiomodulation (PBM), a non-invasive therapeutic method that utilizes red or near-infrared light, has shown promising applications in the central and peripheral nervous systems.
