Objective: To assess whether polymorphism of the interleukin (IL)-6 gene at the position -174 was implicated in the incidence of Henoch-Schönlein pur-pura (HSP). A further objective was to determine if any relationship existed with severe systemic complications of HSP, in particular with severe renal and gastrointestinal involvement.
Methods: Unselected patients from Northwest Spain with primary cutaneous vasculitis classified as HSP according to proposed criteria were studied. All patients included in the present study were required to have had at least 2 year's follow-up. Patients and controls were genotyped for a single biallelic (G/C) nucleotide polymorphism in the promoter region at the position -174 of the IL-6 gene by a polymerase reaction chain-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method.
Results: Forty-six Caucasian HSP patients and 124 healthy matched controls were studied. No allele or genotype differences between the whole group of HSP and controls were observed. This was also the case when HSP patients were stratified by the presence of gastrointestinal complications, nephritis, and permanent renal involvement (renal sequelae).
Conclusion: The polymorphism in IL-6 gene promoter (-174 G/C) does not appear to be a genetic risk factor for HSP in Northwest Spain.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of preoperative visual aids on anxiety and pain management in patients with low educational backgrounds undergoing glaucoma filtering surgery.
Methods: A randomized, single-blinded, single-center clinical trial was conducted at a tertiary eye hospital in Shantou, China. Patients scheduled for glaucoma filtering surgery were randomly assigned to either a conventional oral education group or a visual aids group.

The marine isolate, strain R-35, was isolated from marine sediments collected from the Glencairn Tidal Pool, Table Mountain National Park, Cape Town, South Africa. The genomic DNA was sequenced using the Ion Torrent GeneStudio™ S5 platform, and the assembly was performed using the SPAdes assembler on the Centre for High Performance Computing (CHPC) Lengau Cluster located at the CSIR, Rosebank, South Africa. The draft genome assembly consisted of 722 contigs totaling 7,625,174 base pairs and a G+C% content of 72.

Purpose: Clinicians monitor scoliosis progression using multiple radiographs during growth. During imaging, arms must be elevated to visualize vertebrae, possibly affecting sagittal alignment. This study aimed to determine the arm position that best represents habitual standing (and possibly allowing hand-based skeletal maturity assessment) to obtain frontal and lateral stereo-radiographs as measured using frontal, sagittal, and transverse angles.

Objective: The objective was to evaluate the performance of two different obstetric ultrasound simulators in assessing the practical skills of trainees compared to the standard method of practical assessment conducted on pregnant women volunteers.
Methods: We performed a prospective observational study. Two simulators were compared: the Simbionix simulator which uses a mannequin and heteroevaluation and the OPUS simulator which uses optical positioning technology with automatic assessment.
