Intraoperative subtenon 2% lidocaine and topical 0.5% proparacaine in patients undergoing strabismus surgery were compared. No additional systemic analgesics and sedatives were used. Mean and total pain scores intraoperatively and postoperatively were not different. Each anesthetic agent provides good intraoperative anesthesia and postoperative analgesia. Topical 0.5% proparacaine may be preferred because of its easy administration and fewer side effects, lack of hospital admission, and immediate and predictable alignment of the eyes.

A retrospective data analysis was performed on 17 eyes from 13 horses which underwent a sub-Tenon's injection to facilitate phacoemulsification or pars plana vitrectomy under general anesthesia between 2018 and 2022. All procedures were performed by the same veterinary ophthalmologist. Seven eyes received a sub-Tenon's dose of 7 ml lidocaine (XylocainÒ, 2 % lidocaine hydrochloride, Germany, Aspen Germany GmbH), and 10 eyes received 7 ml mepivacaine (MepinaestÒ purum 2 %, mepivacaine hydrochloride, Switzerland, Gebro Pharma GmbH).

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the safety and effectiveness of performing pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) without intravenous (IV) anesthesia, focusing on patient outcomes and adverse events.
  • Conducted between September 2018 and April 2022, the study involved 357 surgeries on 319 patients, with most receiving oral sedation and a small group undergoing the procedure without any sedation.
  • Results showed significant improvement in visual acuity post-surgery and no major complications, indicating that PPV can be performed safely without an anesthesiologist, though further research is suggested to better assess patient comfort and complications.

Background: As studies have shown a reduction in the occurrence of the oculocardiac reflex with the addition of local anaesthesia, we changed our care regime accordingly a few years ago. To promote and establish better patient care, we retrospectively analysed the files of our patients who underwent strabismus surgery from 2013 to 2021 in order to compare strabismus surgery under general anaesthesia with and without local anaesthetics in a routine clinical setting.

Patients And Methods: Data from 238 adult patients who had undergone strabismus surgery could be extracted from the files: G1: n = 102, only general anaesthesia; G2: n = 136, preoperative application of tetracaine eye drops and intraoperative subtenon lidocaine/levobupivacaine in addition to general anaesthesia.

Two recent cases of central retinal artery occlusion under otherwise uncomplicated sub-Tenon's block that resulted in significant visual loss after cataract surgery prompted us to undertake a literature review of such cases. We identified 97 cases of retinal artery occlusion after ophthalmic surgery under regional anaesthesia that had no immediate signs of block-related complications. These occurred after various intraocular (87%) and extraocular (13%) operations, across a wide range of ages (19-89 years) on patients with (59%) or without (39%) known risk factors.

Background And Aims: This prospective randomized study designed to evaluate the efficacy of dexmedetomidine either added to LA mixture or administered IV during subtenon block for cataract surgery.

Material And Methods: 75 patients, undergoing cataract surgery with subtenon anesthesia, were assigned randomly into three equal groups, Group I received subtenon bupivacaine 0.5% (1 ml) + lidocaine 2% (1 ml) + saline 0.
