Social disparities on PrEP use and awareness among sexual and gender minorities using smartphones in India.

Ther Adv Infect Dis

November 2024

Instituto Nacional de Infectología Evandro Chagas, Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (INI-Fiocruz), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an effective method for preventing HIV, but in India, where private healthcare dominates, there's a lack of information on who is benefiting from it.
  • A study used the Grindr app to survey sexual and gender minorities in India, revealing that only 30.3% were aware of PrEP and just 3.1% were currently using it, with awareness and use linked to socio-behavioral factors.
  • The findings indicate low overall awareness and use of PrEP, particularly among lower-income groups, suggesting that integrating PrEP into government and NGO programs could help increase its adoption and combat HIV.

There has been limited research examining the factors that influence how male sex workers (MSWs) determine their fees for their services. Experimental Gambling Research Laboratory, School of Health, Medical and Applied Sciences, CQUniversity, University Drive, 4670, Bundaberg, QLD, Australia.

Background: Gambling abstinence when underage lowers the risk of harmful gambling in later life. However, little research has examined why many young people refrain from gambling, even though this knowledge can inform protective strategies and lower risk factors to reduce underage gambling and subsequent harm. This study draws on the lived experience of adolescent non-gamblers to explore how social determinants while growing up have shaped their reasons and choices to not gamble.

BMC Nurs

April 2024

Centre for Medicine and Society, University of Freiburg, Fahnenbergplatz, 79085, Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany.

Background: The UK National Health Service (NHS) is one of the largest employers in the world and employs around 360,000 registered nurses. Following a protracted pay dispute in December 2022 NHS nurses engaged in industrial action resulting in the largest nurse strikes in the 74-year history of the NHS. Initially it appeared these strikes were a direct consequence of pay disputes but evidence suggests that the situation was more complex.
