The authors propose a new approach to understand the electrostatic surface contributions to the interactions of large but finite periodic distributions of charges. They present a simple method to derive and interpret the surface contribution to any electrostatic field produced by a periodic distribution of charges. They discuss the physical and mathematical interpretations of this term. They present several examples and physical details associated with the calculation of the surface term. Finally, they provide a simple derivation of the surface contribution to the virial. This term does not disappear even if tinfoil boundary conditions are applied.

We developed antibiotic-based micelles with bone-targeting and charge-switchable properties (P-CASMs) for treating infectious osteomyelitis. The amphiphilic molecules are formed by combining ciprofloxacin (CIP) with ligand 1 through a mild salifying reaction, and spontaneously self-assemble into antibiotic-based micelles (ASMs) in aqueous solution. Acrylate groups on ligand 1 enable cross-linking of ASMs with pentaerythritol tetra(mercaptopropionate) via a click reaction, forming pH-sensitive cross-linked micelles (CASMs).

Cyclodextrins can serve as carriers for various payloads, utilizing their capacity to form unique host-guest inclusion complexes within their cavity and their versatile surface functionalization. Recently, cationic cyclodextrins have gained considerable attention, as they can improve drug permeability across negatively charged cell membranes and efficiently condense negatively charged nucleic acid due to electrostatic interactions. A simple and non-chemical binding nanofiber (-CD/PA) adsorbent was obtained by electrospinning a mixture of -cyclodextrin (-CD) and polyacrylate (PA). The cationic dyes in wastewater were removed by the host-guest inclusion complex of the -cyclodextrin and the electrostatic interaction between the polyacrylate and the dyes groups. The influence of the content of -cyclodextrin on the surface morphology and adsorption capacity of the nanofiber membrane was discussed, and the optimized adsorption capacity of nanofiber adsorption material was determined.
