The translational value of the marble burying task (MBT) is debatable. Here we performed video analysis of behaviors during the MBT to accurately capture the details of all behaviors displayed during this task. Our results show that a count of marbles buried at the end of the task may not be a good translational correlate of the 'intentional marble burying' that the task is assumed to measure.

Swimming through sand: using accelerometers to observe the cryptic, pre-emergence life-stage of sea turtle hatchlings.

Proc Biol Sci

October 2024

School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of New South Wales, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

Animals that hatch within a subterranean nest, such as turtle hatchlings, expend some of their limited energy reserves digging out through sand or soil to reach the surface. In sea turtles, this emergence process can take the hatchlings 3-7 days. However, we have a poor understanding of this process as it is difficult to observe what is occurring underground.

Evolution of novel sensory organs in fish with legs.

Curr Biol

October 2024

Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA 02138, USA. Electronic address:

How do animals evolve new traits? Sea robins are fish that possess specialized leg-like appendages used to "walk" along the sea floor. Here, we show that legs are bona fide sense organs that localize buried prey. Legs are covered in sensory papillae that receive dense innervation from touch-sensitive neurons, express non-canonical epithelial taste receptors, and mediate chemical sensitivity that drives predatory digging behavior.

Ceftriaxone upregulates GLT1 glutamate transporter in the brain and may have anti-CFC and anti-OCD effects. Twenty WZ-5HT rats were used to investigate the effects of ceftriaxone on obsessive-compulsive (OCD)-like behaviour in the marble-burying (MB) test, freezing behaviour in contextual fear conditioning (CFC) and expression of GLT1 protein in the hippocampus or amygdala using immunoblots. Fifteen DBA/2J mice were used in the MB test.

The reconstruction of past life based on archaeozoology is a challenging domain that offers a range of valuable details concerning former human and animal populations. Additionally, the ancient era is a source of information for human and veterinary medicine, as well as for other biological sciences. This report highlights a pathological lesion identified during the investigation of a horse skeleton from a pit dated La Tène in Alba County (Romania).
