Published: May 2007

Methamphetamine use has spread over the past decade from the West to other regions of the nation. Since 2000, Missouri has ranked first in clandestine laboratory incidents. The continuing threat of Mexican-produced methamphetamine tempers recent reduction of clandestine laboratory incidents in Missouri. There are a number of consequences related to the use of the drug and Missouri's healthcare professionals could potentially play key roles in prevention and treatment of the problem.

Using eddy covariance data to detect nuclear reactor operational status.

J Environ Manage

January 2025

Nuclear and Engineering Nonproliferation Division, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, NM, 87545, USA.

Monitoring nuclear reactor operations is vital for nuclear safeguards as it ensures that reactors are in compliance with international legal agreements. Validating nuclear facilities and activities, including potential clandestine activities, is currently accomplished by using remotely sensed data from satellites and aircrafts and on-site sampling. However, these techniques are temporally-limited as sampling and interpretation of environmental releases frequently involve labor-intensive, on-site collections.

Weather deviations linked to undocumented migration and return between Mexico and the United States.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

November 2024

Department of Sociology and School of Public and International Affairs, Princeton University, Princeton, NJ 08544.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how changing climate leads to extreme weather conditions that affect undocumented migration patterns between Mexico and the U.S.
  • Data from over 48,000 individuals in 84 Mexican agricultural communities highlights that severe drought increases the likelihood of migrating to the U.S., while persistent extreme weather reduces chances of returning home.
  • The research suggests that as climate change intensifies weather events, it will further drive clandestine migration and expose individuals to greater risks during their journey across borders.

As nuclear technology evolves in response to increased demand for diversification and decarbonization of the energy sector, new and innovative approaches are needed to effectively identify and deter the proliferation of nuclear arms, while ensuring safe development of global nuclear energy resources. Preventing the use of nuclear material and technology for unsanctioned development of nuclear weapons has been a long-standing challenge for the International Atomic Energy Agency and signatories of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. Environmental swipe sampling has proven to be an effective technique for characterizing clandestine proliferation activities within and around known locations of nuclear facilities and sites.

Methamphetamine detection using portable capillary electrophoresis coupled with a swab-based extraction device.

Talanta

October 2024

Australian Centre for Research on Separation Science (ACROSS), School of Natural Science, University of Tasmania, Private Bag 75, Hobart, Tasmania, 7001, Australia. Electronic address:

Methamphetamine (MA) is one of the most virulent illicit drugs that can be synthesized from household materials leading to its prevalent trafficking and local manufacturing in clandestine drug laboratories (clan labs). The significant problems of tracing MA in clan labs and monitoring drug abusers lie in the lag time between sample collection and analysis and the number of tests done. Capillary electrophoresis (CE) is a rapid separation technique amenable to miniaturization and field testing.

Methamphetamine contamination of residential properties remains a serious public health concern for members of the public. External stakeholders including Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) and testing and remediation technicians are engaged on investigating whether contamination has occurred from manufacturing or smoking processes. More specifically, local council EHOs are responsible for managing clandestine drug laboratories when notified by police and also for responding to public enquiries.
