There are indications that complement activation may be involved in inflammatory processes of the cornea. To investigate the role of the complement system in experimental keratitis, rats were depleted of their plasma complement by treatment with cobra venom factor (CVF). intraperitoneal injection of CVF resulted in undetectable complement serum activity for 6 days when measured by a hemolytic assay. The corneal inflammatory response, induced by a single intracorneal injection of heterologous serum into nonsensitized CVF-treated rats, was suppressed significantly. The onset of the clinical symptoms of keratitis was delayed, and the severity was reduced. In addition, analysis of the serum antibody titers showed impaired antibody synthesis in the CVF-treated group. When keratitis was induced by an intracorneal antigen challenge in sensitized rats, no difference was observed when comparing the clinical signs of keratitis of CVF-treated animals with sham-treated animals. In addition, CVF treatment did not alter the course of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced corneal inflammation. These findings suggest that the role of plasma complement activation in antigen- and LPS-induced keratitis appears to be limited. The implications for the immunopathologic mechanisms underlying keratitis are discussed.

Background: We report a rare case of fungal keratitis caused by , a filamentous fungus that is widely distributed in soil and graminaceous plants.
Case Presentation: A 40-year-old Mongoloid male patient came to our outpatient clinic with painful swelling of the left eye and redness, after being cut by a tree branch 1 week prior. After examination, the patient was diagnosed with a corneal ulcer of the left eye, and was given levofloxacin eye drops and levofloxacin ophthalmic gel.

The treatment of fungal keratitis(FK) remains challenging due to delayed fungal detection and the limited effectiveness of antifungal drugs. Fungal infection can activate both innate and adaptive immune responses in the cornea. Fungi stimulate the production of oxidative stress-related biomarkers and mediate the infiltration of neutrophils, macrophages, and T cells.

Substance P (SP) expressed by corneal nerves, is an 11-amino acid long neuropeptide from the tachykinin family, encoded by the Tac1 gene, and binds to neurokinin receptors. SP overexpression is associated with various pathological responses in the cornea including vasodilation, pain, inflammation, and angiogenesis in the normally avascular tissue. This study investigates the role of neurokinin-1 receptor (NK-1R) mediated signaling in nociception, nerve regeneration, and neuronal activation following mechanical corneal injury in mice.

Purpose: Acanthamoeba species are eucaryotic protozoa found predominantly in soil and water. They cause ulceration and vision loss in the cornea (Acanthamoeba keratitis) and central nervous system (CNS) infection involving the lungs (granulomatous amoebic encephalitis). Antiparasitic drugs currently used in the treatment of infections caused by Acanthamoeba species are not effective at the desired level in some anatomical regions such as the eye and CNS.

Conjunctival malignant melanoma is extremely rare, with no standard of care established at moment. Here we report a 65-year-old woman, as a hepatitis B virus (HBV) carrier, who presented concurrently a liver mass and lower bulbar conjunctival pigmented lesions in the right eye. Needle liver biopsy and excisional conjunctival biopsy showed hepatocellular carcinoma and conjunctival malignant melanoma , respectively.
