Newborn screening is the largest genetic testing effort for newborns in the U.S. Its purpose is to identify newborns who are at risk for metabolic, endocrine, or hematologic disorders. A review of the literature was conducted to determine the benefits of newborn screening; specimen collection timing and handling; ethical considerations of screening; as well as current practices regarding consent, notification of results, and follow-up procedures. The use of tandem mass spectrometry for expanded newborn screening and postmortem diagnosis of unexplained infant death was also reviewed. This article is intended to educate health care providers in the areas of controversy that surround the U.S. newborn screening program, with the hope of encouraging further research in this mportant area of newborn care.

Background: Programmatic interventions to increase the detection of children with tuberculosis (TB) are rarely evaluated to understand age- and sex-specific completion rates. We applied modified TB screening and treatment cascade frameworks to assess indicators of effective implementation by age and sex of a TB screening program for children (zero to 14 years) in Bangladesh.

Methods: We implemented an intensified screening program for paediatric TB detection in 119 health care facilities (2018-21).

Background: The principal objective of our study is to evaluate the characteristics of babies with type 1 ROP, screening practices and treatment trends in a tertiary care centre in Pakistan.

Methods: This prospective study at Mayo Hospital, Lahore (July 2022-July 2024), included 89 preterm infants with type 1 ROP, selected using non-probability sampling. Infants were categorized based on international (GA < 32weeks or BW < 1500 g) and local screening criteria (GA < 35 weeks or BW < 2000 g), and treatment outcomes were evaluated across three groups: Anti-VEGF, combination therapy (Anti-VEGF followed by laser), and laser therapy.

Department of Medical Genetics and Pediatrics, National Taiwan University Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan; Center for Precision Medicine, China Medical University Hospital, Taichung, Taiwan. Electronic address:

In recent years, the number of diseases included in newborn screening (NBS) tests has increased rapidly, led by the development of both technology and treatments. Many neurometabolic diseases can now be screened, but direct involvement of the brain, especially in the severe forms of these diseases, causes challenges in NBS. For example, differentiating between neuropathic and nonneuropathic types of disease is difficult but critical because the treatments used can differ.
