Published: May 1982

From the defatted seeds of Cassia marginata fam (Caesalpinaceae) two new anthraquinone glycosides have been isolated and characterised as physcion-8-O-alpha-L-xylopyranoside and emodin-8-O-alpha-L-arabinopyranoside.

Green synthesised silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been identified as a promising new therapy pathway for cancer because of their anti-angiogenic potency. In the present study, CM-AgNPs were biosynthesized using aqueous leaf extract of Cassia marginata Roxb (CM) and were confirmed by spectral studies like UV-Visible and attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopic techniques. The structure and shape of the biosynthesized CM-AgNPs were confirmed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDX), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) with selected area electron diffraction (SAED) studies.

We report for the first time the environmental isolation of Cryptococcus neoformans from decaying wood and bark debris of living trees in Guindy National Park, Chennai, South India. Of the 40 trees screened, four isolates of Cryptococcus species were recovered of which two were Cryptococcus gattii, one was C. neoformans and one was untypable.

Semipurified saline extracts of seeds from Crotolaria juncea, Cassia marginata, Ficus racemosa, Cicer arietinum (L-532), Gossipium indicum (G-27), Melia composita, Acacia lenticularis, Meletia ovalifolia, Acacia catechu and Peltophorum ferrenginium were tested for leukoagglutinating activity against whole leukocytes and mononuclear cells from patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia (34), acute myeloblastic leukaemia (5), acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (7), chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (3), various lymphoproliferative/haematologic disorders (54), and normal healthy subjects (50). In addition, bone marrow cells from three patients undergoing diagnostic bone marrow aspiration and activated lymphocytes from mixed lymphocyte cultures (MLC) were also tested. All the seed extracts agglutinated white blood cells from patients with different types of leukaemia.
