The naked mole-rat is a species of growing research interest. Recent focus on this species from both a biomedical and zoological perspective has led to important discoveries regarding eusociality and ecophysiological and sensory traits associated with life below ground as well as natural protection from variable oxygen availability, acid-induced pain, and the vagaries of aging. These features serve to remind us that many foundational discoveries have arisen using extremophilic organisms and elucidating the mechanisms they employ to survive the harsh environmental conditions they encounter.

Public policy is part of and a creator of modern environments. By intent or neglect, it affects our socially-created and natural worlds. It sets the odds for what organizations and individuals are likely to produce and consume in the form of goods, services and information, and assures how equitably these options for choice-making--and thus for life styles--are dispersed among social and economic groups.

The rates at which neurons synthesize such Group I neurotransmitters as serotonin, acetylcholine, and the catecholamines norepinephrine and dopamine depend physiologicall on the availability to them of the circulating precursors for these compounds (tryptophan, choline and tyrosine, respectively). The concentrations of precursor in the circulation and in neurons change rapidly after food consumption, depending upon what is eaten. Nutrient intake thus normally influences the synthesis of these neurotransmitters.
