This paper describes a concept of concentration and binary separation of particles and its experimental confirmations for digital microfluidics where droplets are driven by the mechanism of electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD). As a fundamental separation unit, a binary separation scheme is developed, separating two different types of particles in one droplet into two droplets, one type each. The separation scheme consists of three distinctive steps, each with their own challenges: (1) isolate two different types of particles by electrophoresis into two regions inside a mother droplet, (2) physically split the mother droplet into two daughter droplets by EWOD actuation so that each type of particle is concentrated in each daughter droplet, and (3) free the daughter droplets from the separation site by EWOD to ready them for follow-up microfluidic operations. By applying a similar procedure to a droplet containing only one type of particle, two daughter droplets of different particle concentrations can be created. Using negatively charged carboxylate modified latex (CML) particles, 83% of the total particles are concentrated in a daughter droplet. Successful binary separation is also demonstrated using negatively charged CML particles and no-charge-treated polystyrene particles. Despite the undesired vortex developed inside the mother droplet, about 70% of the total CML particles are concentrated in one daughter droplet while about 70% of the total polystyrene particles are concentrated in the other daughter droplet.

Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) can significantly improve gas separation performance, but the type and state of the filler in the membrane matrix are key indicators for the development of MMMs. Therefore, in this work, 6FDA-DAM/ODA (1:1), metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with different particle sizes (UiO-66 and UiO-66-NH) were synthesized, and then MOFs were doped into 6FDA-DAM/ODA to prepare MMMs. The effects of the dopant materials and their particle sizes on the gas separation performance of the membranes were investigated by testing the permeability of the MMMs to H, CO, CH, and N.

The ligand-docking behavior of hevein, the major latex protein from the rubber tree Hevea brasiliensis (Euphorbiaceae), has been investigated by the unguided molecular dynamics (MD) simulation method. An oligosaccharide molecule, initially placed in an arbitrary position, was allowed to move around hevein for a prolonged simulation time, on the order of microseconds, with the expectation of spontaneous ligand docking of the oligosaccharide molecule to the binding site of hevein. In the binary solution system consisting of a hevein molecule and a chito-trisaccharide (GlcNAc) molecule, three out of the six separate simulation runs successfully reproduced the complex structure of the observed binding from.

This study developed a W/O/W emulsion gel encapsulating proanthocyanidins from Aronia melanocarpa (Michx.) Elliott (APC) using polyglycerol ricinoleate (PGPR) as the lipophilic emulsifier and sodium caseinate (NaCN)-alginate (Alg) as the hydrophilic emulsifier. The optimal preparation process was established based on particle size, zeta potential, phase separation, centrifugal stability, and microscopic morphology: 4.

Introduction: Ectopic pregnancy (EP) is a serious clinical gynecological emergency. Patients with EP history are at higher risk of EP resulting from IVF/ICSI (IVF-EP). Besides, studies have suggested that previous EP treatments may affect the incidence of IVF-EP.

Energy-efficient separation of light alkanes from alkenes is considered as one of the most important separations of the chemical industry today due to the high energy penalty associated with the applied conventional cryogenic technologies. This study introduces fluorine-doped activated carbon adsorbents, where elemental fluorine incorporation into the carbon matrix plays a unique role in achieving high ethane selectivity. This enhanced selectivity arises from specific interactions between surface-doped fluorine atoms and ethane molecules, coupled with porosity modulation.
