Statins provoking MELAS syndrome. A case report.

Eur Neurol

Department of Internal Medicine, School of Medicine, University of Connecticut, Farmington, Conn., USA.

Published: June 2007

Background: Statins inhibit the production of 2,3-dimethoxy,5-methyl,6-polyisoprene parabenzoquinone also known as ubiquinone or coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), which is required for mitochondrial electron transport. Idiopathic or primary CoQ10 deficiencies have been known to cause mitochondrial encephalomyopathy.

Methods: We present the case of a patient with mitochondrial syndrome, consisting of mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes (MELAS), whose symptoms were temporally related to statin therapy.

Conclusion: Statins may provoke symptoms related to MELAS in susceptible individuals.

Eryptotic erythrocytes are prone to adhere to the vascular endothelium, provoking atherosclerosis. As statins do not prevent eryptosis compounds with anti-eryptotic effects could help treated hypercholesterolemic subjects in decreasing cardiovascular disease risk. Plant sterols (PSs) have shown this anti-eryptotic effect ex vivo, along with their cholesterol-lowering activity.

The clinical value of β-blockers in patients with stable angina.

Curr Med Res Opin

April 2024

Lipid Clinic Heart Institute (Incor), University of São Paulo, Medical School Hospital, São Paulo, Brazil.

Stable angina, one manifestation of chronic coronary syndrome (CCS), is characterised by intermittent episodes of insufficient blood supply to the myocardium, provoking symptoms of myocardial ischaemia, particularly chest pain. These attacks usually occur during exercise or stress. Anti-ischaemic drugs are the mainstay of pharmacologic management of CCS with symptoms of angina.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent research has found a specific group called 'Lean Mass Hyper-Responders' (LMHR) who have high LDL cholesterol levels on low-carb diets, typically showing LDL-C ≥ 200 mg/dL alongside high HDL and low triglycerides, mostly in metabolically healthy lean individuals.
  • A study tested if adding carbohydrates via Oreo cookies to an LMHR subject's ketogenic diet could lower LDL-C more than statin therapy; the subject maintained ketosis while consuming the cookies, which led to a significant drop in LDL-C.
  • Results showed LDL-C dropped from 384 mg/dL to 111 mg/dL after Oreo consumption (71% reduction), while after statin treatment, it reduced to 284 mg/dL (32

Preeclampsia (PE) is a pregnancy-specific disorder affecting 4-10% of all expectant women. It greatly increases the risk of maternal and foetal death. Although the main symptoms generally appear after week 20 of gestation, scientific studies indicate that the mechanism underpinning PE is initiated at the beginning of gestation.
