Editing soft shadows in a digital photograph.

IEEE Comput Graph Appl

Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sicence, Northwestern University, USA.

Published: April 2007

This technique for modeling, editing, and rendering shadow edges in a photograph or a synthetic image lets users separate the shadow from the rest of the image and make arbitrary adjustments to its position, sharpness, and intensity.

Introduction: Osteogenesis imperfecta is a rare inherited connective tissue disorder that results in excessive bone fragility due to defects in collagen production. The majority of osteogenesis imperfecta cases are inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern, and 17 genetic causes have been identified. Diagnosis is usually based on clinical presentation and low bone mineral density scores, while treatment involves a multidisciplinary approach using medical therapies such as bisphosphonates, vitamin C, and pamidronate.

Paediatric renal tumours: an update on challenges and recent developments.

Virchows Arch

January 2025

Histology Laboratory, Children's Health Ireland, Dublin, Ireland.

Paediatric renal tumours include a broad range of neoplasms which largely differ, but also overlap to a smaller extent, with adult kidney cancer. These include the embryonal tumour nephroblastoma, which accounts for the majority of cases of kidney cancer in the first decade of life and, despite boasting a cure in ~ 90% cases, still presents clinical challenges in a small proportion of cases. A variety of less common mesenchymal tumours, including the mostly indolent congenital mesoblastic nephroma, clear cell sarcoma of kidney which continues to be associated with poor outcomes for higher stage disease, and the typically lethal malignant rhabdoid tumour, form the bulk of the remaining presentations in the first decade.

Intracellular delivery of proteins has attracted significant interest in biological research and cancer treatment, yet it continues to face challenges due to the lack of effective delivery approaches. Herein, we developed an efficient strategy cationic α-helical polypeptide-mediated anionic proprotein delivery. The protein was reversibly modified with adenosine triphosphate dynamic covalent chemistry to prepare an anionic proprotein (A-protein) with abundant phosphate groups.

Potential Health Risks from Heavy Metal in Green Mussels (Perna Viridis) From the Southeastern Part of the Bay of Bengal.

Biol Trace Elem Res

January 2025

Department of Fisheries, Faculty of Marine Sciences and Fisheries, University of Chittagong, Chittagong, 4331, Bangladesh.

The Southeastern part of the Bay of Bengal is increasingly threatened by heavy metal pollution, posing significant risks to both aquatic life and human health. In this context, the contamination levels of six heavy metals-Cadmium (Cd), Lead (Pb), Zinc (Zn), Copper (Cu), Manganese (Mn), and Iron (Fe)-were assessed in the soft tissues of Green mussels (Perna viridis) from five key sites: Matamuhuri, Moheshkhali, Bakhkhali, Naf, and St. Martin.

Ribonucleoprotein (RNP)-based CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing holds great potential for the treatment of choroidal neovascularization (CNV), which however, is challenged by the lack of efficient cytosolic protein delivery tools. Herein, reversibly-phosphorylated pro-proteins (P-proteins) with conjugated adenosine triphosphate (ATP) tags are engineered and coupled with a membrane-penetrating, guanidine-enriched, α-helical polypeptide (GP) to mediate robust and universal cytosolic delivery. GP forms salt-stable nanocomplexes (NCs) with P-proteins via electrostatic interaction and salt bridging, and the helix-assisted, strong membrane activities of GP enabled efficient cellular internalization and endolysosomal escape of NCs.
