Ultraviolet absorption (UV) and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra of enantiopure (Z)-8-methoxy-4-cyclooctenone (MCO) were measured in hexane to give a normal single UV absorption band at 298 nm, which is assigned to the carbonyl's pi*<--n transition. Unexpectedly, the ECD spectrum exhibited an apparent couplet pattern with vibrational fine structures. Obviously, the conventional CD exciton coupling mechanism cannot be applied to this bisignate CD signal observed for single-chromophoric MCO. Variable temperature-ECD and vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectral measurements, simultaneous UV and ECD spectral band resolution, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations of energy and structure revealed that this apparent CD couplet originates from a rather complicated spectral overlap of more than three conformers of MCO, two of which exhibit mirror-imaged ECD spectra at appreciably deviated wavelengths. In the simultaneous band-resolution analysis, the observed UV and ECD spectra were best fitted to four overlapping bands. Two major conformers were identified by comparing the experimental IR and VCD spectra with the simulated ones, and the other two by comparing the observed UV and ECD spectra with the theoretical ones obtained by time-dependent DFT calculations. It was shown that the combined use of experimental ECD and VCD spectra and theoretical DFT calculations can give a reasonable interpretation for the Cotton effects of the conformationally flexible molecule MCO.

Understanding the locomotor characteristics of early diverging ground-walking chameleons (members of the genera Brookesia, Rhampholeon, Palleon, and Rieppeleon) can help to explain how their unique morphology is adapted to fit their environment and mode of life. However, nearly all quantitative studies of chameleon locomotion thus far have focused on the larger "true arboreal" chameleons. We investigated kinematics and spatiotemporal gait characteristics of the Brown Leaf Chameleon (Brookesia superciliaris) on different substrates and compared them with true arboreal chameleons, nonchameleon lizards, and other small arboreal animals.

This report is of a rare case involving a 27-year-old female who presented to the hospital with the pathological couplet of colocolic intussusception and cecal bascule causing bowel obstruction. Up to the time of presentation to the hospital, this patient had not undergone a full investigation for a known iron deficiency, anemia. Subsequently, during the emergency admission and after having an operative surgical procedure, the patient was found to have both a congenitally malpositioned cecum and a benign colonic polyp-forming condition.

We report here a simple, facile, and direct nonempirical protocol for determining the absolute stereochemistry of a variety of chiral 1,2-diols and amino alcohols at room temperature with no chemical derivatization using Mg(II)bisporphyrin as a host. Addition of excess substrates resulted in the formation of a 1:2 host-guest complex in which two substrates bind in an unusual endo-endo fashion because of interligand H-bonding within the bisporphyrin cavity leading to the formation of a unidirectional screw in the bisporphyrin moiety that allowed us an accurate absolute stereochemical determination of the chiral substrate via exciton-coupled circular dichroism (ECCD). The sign of the CD couplet has also been found to be inverted when the stereogenic center is moved by one C atom simply from the bound to an unbound functionality and thus able to discriminate between them successfully.

The electrocardiogram of a 72-year-old woman showed episodes of nonsustained narrow QRS complex tachycardia. Tracing analysis suggested that the arrhythmia was due to interpolated atrial extrasystoles occurring in bigeminal rhythm. Interpolation of atrial extrasystoles is a rare phenomenon.
