The Joseph M Donald Endowment for the Archival Collection of the Southern Surgical Association is named for the 73rd President Elect of the Southern Surgical Association (Figure 1), who died in 1961 at age 57 before he had the opportunity to deliver his Presidential Address. Dr Donald's career as a surgeon in Birmingham began in 1931 after the completion of his residency at the Mayo Clinic. He was one of four generations of Donalds to serve Alabama as physicians.

To overtake competitors, microbes produce and secrete secondary metabolites that kill neighbouring cells and sequester nutrients. This metabolite-mediated competition probably evolved in complex microbial communities in the presence of viral pathogens. We therefore hypothesized that microbes secrete natural products that make competitors sensitive to phage infection.

This perspective piece addresses the challenges junior clinician-educators face as they navigate career development within academic medical centers. In addition to understanding local promotion and tenure processes and seeking mentorship, we argue that faculty feedback is an often neglected, but essential, component in clinician-educator development. We repurpose and use the MISCA model-Message, Implementation, Student, Context, and Agents-as a framework to better understand and improve feedback for faculty.
