More than 500 centres in China hold over 300,000 individuals in what has been described by the United Nations as unethical and ineffective compulsory treatment and rehabilitation centres. Individuals in these centres face widespread human rights abuses, including lack of due process, forced labour, physical and sexual violence, and denial of healthcare. Because of the vulnerability of individuals in detention settings to abuse in research trials, ethical guidelines have required research to pose no more than minimal risk, to address the process of incarceration, and the health or well-being of detained individuals.

This retrospective study aimed to describe the characteristics of cancer patients undergoing depression and distress screening at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center and to assess factors associated with their screening results. Data were retrieved from electronic medical records of adult Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center patients with at least one oncology encounter between January 2021 and June 2022, who underwent both depression and distress screening using the Patient Health Questionnaire-2/9 for depression and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network distress thermometer for distress during the encounter. Demographics, clinical factors, and screening results were analyzed using descriptive statistics and binary logistic regression.

Attendance at these programs is known to differ by sex and by smoking status, with females and those who smoke being less likely to attend. However, little is known about whether the risk factors of being female and smoking are cumulative, and how outcomes from secondary prevention differ by these subgroups.
