Secretan's syndrome is a rare condition; the exact etiology remains unclear. It has no specific treatment and the care must be multidisciplinary and personalized. We report a case of a young female patient who presented with a unilateral and painful swelling of the dorsum of the right hand.

Secretan's syndrome is a rare clinical condition with recurrent swelling of the forearm and dorsum of the hand, together with flexion contracture of the fingers and a thumb that is spared. The disease is associated with automutilation. We present a typical case of a 42-year old women with Secretan's syndrome.

Henri-François Secretan (1856-1916) was a Swiss physician, who in 1901 described a medical condition characterized by a hard, sometimes cyanotic oedema (Charcot's blue oedema) on the back of one or both hands and forearms. This condition was later known as Secretan's disease or Secretan's syndrome. This report discusses Henri Secretan and the syndrome that bears his name.
