SELDI-TOF MS is a mass spectrometric technique which has been extensively used for biomarker discovery. In this study, we show that in-source decay is an important source for the generation of additional spectral peaks with this technique, both for pure proteins and proteins in serum samples. Thus, SELDI-TOF MS could be used to gain sequence information from proteins, but the results also question the uncritical use of SELDI-TOF MS as a general method for the detection of biomarkers.

Monoclonal antibody (mAb) glycoengineering has the potential to improve the efficacy of biopharmaceuticals by fine-tuning specific biological properties. Glycosylation analysis is key to monitoring the glycoengineering process. Various mass spectrometry (MS)-based methods are available to characterize mAb glycosylation at different structural levels, but comprehensive analysis is typically time-consuming and costly.

Chemical moderate preoxidation for algae-laden water is an economical and prospective strategy for controlling algae and exogenous pollutants, whereas it is constrained by a lack of effective on-line evaluation and quick-response feedback method. Herein, excitation-emission matrix parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC) was used to identify cyanobacteria fluorophores after preoxidation of sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) at Excitation/Emission wavelength of 260(360)/450 nm, based on which the algal cell integrity and intracellular organic matter (IOM) release were quantitatively assessed. Machine learning modeling of fluorescence spectral data for prediction of moderate preoxidation using NaClO was established.

While edible algae might seem low in fat, the lipids they contain are crucial for good health and preventing chronic diseases. This study introduces a binary matrix to analyze all the polar lipids in both macroalgae (Wakame-, Dulse-, and Nori- spp.) and microalgae (Spirulina-, and Chlorella-) using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS).

Background: Diffusing alpha-emitters Radiation Therapy ("Alpha DaRT") is a new technique that enables the use of alpha particles for the treatment of solid tumors. Alpha DaRT employs interstitial sources carrying a few Ci of Ra below their surface, designed to release a chain of short-lived atoms (progeny of Ra) which emit alpha particles, along with beta, Auger, and conversion electrons, x- and gamma rays. These atoms diffuse around the source and create-primarily through their alpha decays-a lethal high-dose region measuring a few millimeters in diameter.

3-Amino-4-hydroxybenzoic acid (AHB) was the first matrix identified by glycoprotein glycan analysis using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS). However, compared to commonly used matrices, such as 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHB), AHB is less efficient at glycan ionization and lacks the ability to ionize other molecular species, such as peptides, and thus is no longer used. In this study, we focused on the glycan-selective ionization ability of AHB and its low-noise properties in the low-molecular-weight region, as we expected that these properties could be enhanced by adding sodium to AHB.
