Background: A clawed hallux is defined as extension of the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint combined with flexion of the interphalangeal (IP) joint. Two operative procedures, the modified Jones procedure and flexor hallucis longus (FHL) transfer, are indicated for correction. The purpose of this study were to evaluate the overall effectiveness of these two procedures in correcting both the clawed hallux deformity and its mechanical consequences and to compare their effect on postoperative plantar pressures.
Methods: The modified Jones procedure and FHL transfer were done on cadaver specimens that were tested before and after surgery in a specialized foot-loading frame. We quantified the angular correction of the MTP and the IP joints, as well as the plantar pressures under the head of the first metatarsal and the hallux.
Results: Both surgeries were equally effective in correcting the angular deformity at the MTP and IP joints (p = 0.037 and 0.0020, respectively). A significant reduction in the plantar pressure (p = 0.015) beneath the first metatarsal was observed with both the modified Jones procedure and the FHL transfer. Overall, there was no significant difference between preoperative and postoperative pressures beneath the hallux (p = 0.5); however, for the FHL overpull group there was significantly less pressure beneath the hallux after surgery (p = 0.014).
Conclusions: The two surgeries produced similar results, but the FHL transfer does not require fusion of the hallux, which is considered an undesirable co-morbidity of the modified Jones procedure.

Background: Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is caused primarily by pathogenic variants in the PKD1 and PKD2 genes. Although the type of ADPKD variant can influence disease severity, rare, hypomorphic PKD1 variants have also been reported to modify disease severity or cause biallelic ADPKD. This study examines whether rare, additional, potentially protein-altering, non-pathogenic PKD1 variants contribute to ADPKD phenotypic outcomes.

Objectives: This study aims to review the societal, economic, and racial factors that impact the usage of spinal cord stimulation for chronic pain. Our working hypothesis is that patients of ethnic minority groups or of lower socioeconomic status (SES) status may have lower implantation rates and usage of spinal cord stimulation (SCS).
Materials And Methods: Our study sourced publications from PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library on December 21st, 2023 for SCS for the purposes of pain management.

Increasing demand for high-purity fine chemicals and a drive for process intensification of large-scale separations have driven significant work on the development of highly engineered porous materials with promise for sorption-based separations. While sorptive separations in porous materials offer energy-efficient alternatives to longstanding thermal-based methods, the particulate nature of many of these sorbents has sometimes limited their large-scale deployment in high-throughput applications such as gas separations, for which the necessary high feed flow rates and gas velocities accrue prohibitive operational costs. These processability limitations have been historically addressed through powder shaping methods aimed at the fabrication of structured sorbent contactors based on pellets, beads or monoliths, commonly obtained as extrudates.

This study examines the longitudinal relationship between unemployment rates, disposable income, stock indices, and aesthetic surgery spending from 2006 to 2019. Data on aesthetic surgery expenditures were collected from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, whereas unemployment data were obtained from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, disposable income from the US Bureau of Economic Analysis, and stock indices from the Federal Reserve Economic Data.

Background: The prevalence of labral tears in asymptomatic active adults has been reported, but the prevalence of labral tears and other incidental hip lesions in the asymptomatic active pediatric population remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of hip abnormalities detected on 3T MRI in an active pediatric population with no hip symptoms and to compare with hip abnormalities found in children and adolescents who underwent an MRI for a hip-related condition.
Methods: After IRB approval, pediatric patients self-reporting as athletes and presenting with isolated, acute-onset knee pain requiring knee MRI were prospectively recruited to undergo 3T MRI of their asymptomatic contralateral hip (ASx).
