The increase in both Mycobacterium tuberculosis human clinical isolates resistant to the essential drugs and cases of disseminated micobacteriosis due to Mycobacterium avium Complex, underlines the need to investigate new antimicobacterial agents. The antimicrobial peptides are a new group of active antibiotics with a particular mechanism of action. Some of them, like cecropin and melittin, isolated from insects, have demonstrated good in vitro activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Synthetic hybrids of those peptides have been more active than individual peptides. In this study, the in vitro activity of two hybrid synthetic peptides from melittin and cecropin against M. tuberculosis, M. avium Complex, Mycobacterium fortuitum and Mycobacterium smegmatis has been evaluated. The minimal inhibitory concentration was determined by using the broth macrodilution technique. The minimal bactericide concentration in Lowenstein Jensen medium was then obtained. The peptides studied were active, in vitro, against M. smegmatis, but they did not show any activity against the other mycobacteria analyzed.

A High-Efficiency Autocatalysis-Oriented Cascade Circuit via Reciprocal Hug-Amplification for Assay-to-Treat Application.

Developing a DNA autocatalysis-oriented cascade circuit (AOCC) via reciprocal navigation of two enzyme-free hug-amplifiers might be desirable for constructing a rapid, efficient, and sensitive assay-to-treat platform. In response to a specific trigger (), seven functional DNA hairpins were designed to execute three-branched assembly (TBA) and three isotropic hybridization chain reaction (3HCR) events for operating the AOCC. This was because three new inducers were reconstructed in TBA arms to initiate 3HCR (TBA-to-3HCR) and periodic repeats were resultantly reassembled in the tandem nicks of polymeric nanowires to rapidly activate TBA in the opposite direction (3HCR-to-TBA) without steric hindrance, thereby cooperatively manipulating sustainable AOCC progress for exponential hug-amplification (1:3).

Draft genome dataset of strain R-35 isolated from tidal pool sediments.

Data Brief

February 2025

Applied Microbial and Health Biotechnology Institute, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, PO Box 1906, Bellville, Cape Town, 7530, South Africa.

The marine isolate, strain R-35, was isolated from marine sediments collected from the Glencairn Tidal Pool, Table Mountain National Park, Cape Town, South Africa. The genomic DNA was sequenced using the Ion Torrent GeneStudio™ S5 platform, and the assembly was performed using the SPAdes assembler on the Centre for High Performance Computing (CHPC) Lengau Cluster located at the CSIR, Rosebank, South Africa. The draft genome assembly consisted of 722 contigs totaling 7,625,174 base pairs and a G+C% content of 72.

Improving the electronic properties of active cathode materials can significantly impact the design of rechargeable batteries. In this study, we investigated the influence of micro-strain on the structural and electronic properties of LiFePO (LFP) by performing combined core-level spectroscopy analysis and electrical conductivity measurements. High-resolution X-ray diffraction measurements, followed by Rietveld refinement analysis, revealed an increase in unit cell parameters due to the enhanced micro-strain in the lattice structure.

Ibuprofen, a widely used NSAID from the aryl propionic acid class, effectively relieves pain, fever, and inflammation. On prolonged use, it leads to gastrointestinal, hepatic, and renal toxicities, particularly gastrointestinal ulcers. These side effects are largely attributed to the carboxylic acid functional group common to NSAIDs.
