We describe a method for evaluating the threshold for cutaneous mechanical sensation in rodents, based on a stimulator that drives a probe against the plantar surface of the foot. The stimulator applies loads that can be either constant or linearly increased. We describe withdrawal responses, including forms of movement that precede foot withdrawals. With constant stimuli, response latency declines in a nonlinear fashion as stimulus magnitude is increased. With ramped stimuli the effect of loading rate is complex, reflecting both the rate of change of the stimulus and the animal's reaction time. We demonstrate the utility of using ramped stimuli in experiments that show that thresholds vary spatially across the foot and experiments that show that intradermal capsaicin injections cause allodynia but not hyperalgesia.

We can often anticipate the precise moment when a stimulus will be relevant for our behavioral goals. Voluntary temporal attention, the prioritization of sensory information at task-relevant time points, enhances visual perception. However, the neural mechanisms of voluntary temporal attention have not been isolated from those of temporal expectation, which reflects timing predictability rather than relevance.

Anthropogenically induced changes to the natural world are increasingly exposing organisms to stimuli and stress beyond that to which they are adapted. In aquatic systems, it is thought that certain life stages are more vulnerable than others, with embryos being flagged as highly susceptible to environmental stressors. Interestingly, evidence from across a wide range of taxa suggests that aquatic embryos can hatch prematurely, potentially as an adaptive response to external stressors, despite the potential for individual costs linked with underdeveloped behavioural and/or physiological functions.

Selective attention is a cognitive function that helps filter out unwanted information. Theories such as the biased competition model (Desimone & Duncan, 1995) explain how attentional templates bias processing towards targets in contexts where multiple stimuli compete for resources. Humans excel at predictively synchronizing their behavior with external rhythms, as in dance or music performance. The neural processes underlying rhythmic inferences are debated: whether predictive perception relies on high-level generative models or whether it can readily be implemented locally by hard-coded intrinsic oscillators synchronizing to rhythmic input remains unclear and different underlying computational mechanisms have been proposed. Here we explore human perception for tone sequences with some temporal regularity at varying rates, but with considerable variability.
