Introduction: Real-life data on the long-term use of a maintenance immunosuppressive protocol in heart transplant patients using delayed Everolimus + Tacrolimus are scarce.

Methods: This is a retrospective study that included all heart transplant patients from 2011 to 2021 in two Spanish hospitals. In Hospital A, the preferred immunosuppressive strategy included Everolimus initiation at 2 months post-transplant combined with Tacrolimus and was compared with the results of Hospital B, where a standard Tacrolimus and Mycophenolate mofetil protocol was used.

High-risk Cytomegalovirus in Heart Transplant: How Can We Improve?

Transplant Proc

January 2025

Cardiology Department, Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre, Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria Hospital 12 de Octubre (imas12), Madrid, Spain; Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Biomédicas en Red de Enfermedades CardioVasculares (CIBERCV), Madrid, Spain. Electronic address:

Background: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is associated with worse outcomes after heart transplant (HT). CMV mismatch (donor positive, recipient negative serology, D+/R-) increases the risk of infection. Guidelines recommend 3 to 6 months of antiviral prophylaxis in these patients.

CMV IgG in the blood is not associated with hepatitis but correlates with poor outcomes in immunotherapy treated melanoma patients.

Cancer Immunol Immunother

January 2025

Department of Dermatology and National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT), Medical Faculty Heidelberg, NCT Heidelberg, a partnership between DKFZ and University Hospital Heidelberg, Heidelberg University, Heidelberg, Germany.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection or reactivation in immune-compromised individuals can lead to a wide range of severe complications including hepatitis. However, its relation with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) induced hepatitis (ICI-hepatitis) and tumor responses in advanced melanoma patients remains unclear. Hundred and ninety metastatic cutaneous melanoma patients (mCM) who received ICI treatment, with CMV IgG or IgM information available at baseline, were included in the study (Cohort 1).

Background: Early Onset Alzheimer's Disease (EOAD) is thought to result from a combination of environmental, genetic, and lifestyle factors. Herpesvirus infections may contribute to the development of EOAD and the objective of our study is to identify potential associations between herpes virus infections and the risk of developing EOAD.

Method: Amyloid-status Alzheimer's disease was diagnosed based on clinical history and ATN criteria, determined by the measuring the Amyloidß42:40 ratio, tau, and 181-Phospho-tau in the cerebrospinal fluid.

Background: It is well established that genetic factors are implicated in the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD), but there is growing interest in how environmental factors like infection contribute to its progression. Recent evidence suggests that greater exposure to infections across the lifespan can potentiate the rate and severity of cognitive decline. In addition to contributing to mechanisms underlying the aggregation of Aβ fragments and phosphorylation of tau proteins, the infectious etiology of dementia may be caused by infectious agents triggering neuroinflammatory pathways and degradation of the blood-brain barrier (BBB).
