N-heterocyclic aromatics are environmentally important carcinogenic pollutants produced by incomplete combustion of organic material. 7H-Dibenzo-(c,g)carbazole (DBC), is a potent skin and systemic carcinogen, whereas dibenz(a,j)acridine (DBA), is a carcinogen with local effects. Therefore, the overall objective of these studies was to determine the initiating ability of DBC and DBA in mouse skin using an initiation-promotion protocol. Acetone-, TPA- or BaP-treated animals were used as negative and positive controls, respectively. DBC, DBA or BaP (200 nmol) dissolved in acetone was applied once to the backs of thirty shaved Hsd:(ICR)Br female mice, followed 2 weeks later with 2 micrograms of TPA in 50 microliters of acetone applied twice a week for up to 24 weeks. Skin tumors developed in 26, 17 and 27 animals, respectively. DBC plus TPA produced a significant influx of dermal macrophages similar to that seen for BaP. Initiation with BaP, DBC or DBA moderated the effect of TPA on most other dermal parameters, particularly neutrophils. These data indicate that, DBC, with apparently different activation pathways than BaP shows similar tumor initiating ability and morphological changes as BaP.

Acetyl tributyl citrate (ATBC) and acetyl triethyl citrate (ATEC) are widely used as plasticizers, but their metabolites as exposure biomarkers for biomonitoring, as well as approximate human metabolic pathways, are not well understood. This study addresses this knowledge gap by conducting suspect screening to propose specific metabolites in human urine as potential biomarkers of exposure and explore their kinetic profiles. Ten volunteers were administered deuterium labeled ATBC (ATBC-d) and seven received ATEC or deuterium labeled ATEC (ATEC-d), with urine samples collected over 48 h post-administration.

Objective: To measure noise exposure present on pickleball courts and assess the risk of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) per guidelines put forward by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
Methods: Observational study measuring noise levels at multiple recreational pickleball courts in the Richmond, VA area, documenting LAeq, LASmax, and LCpeak at courtside and waiting areas of pickleball courts. Measurements were completed using the NIOSH SLM application on an iPhone 13 with iMM-6 Calibrated Measurement Microphone (equivalent to IEC 61672-1 Class II) that was calibrated using ND-9 Sound Level Calibrator (IEC942 Class I).

This study explores the food transport efficiency (E) in a termite tunnel consisting of a main tunnel and a 2-segment loop tunnel through a model simulation. Simulated termites navigate between the main and loop tunnels through branching nodes (a, b, c, d) with associated probabilities (P1, P2, P3, P4). The loop tunnel locations (δ) are considered: near the nest (δ = 1), at the center of the main tunnel (δ = 2), and close to the food site (δ = 3).

Background: Exposure to excessive noise volumes is an occupational health and safety risk. Australian guidelines recommend a time weighted exposure maximum of 85 dB (dB) or a maximum peak noise level of up to 140 dB, as chronic and repeated high dB exposure can result in significant hearing impairment. The aim of this study was to assess the volume of noise generated by common surgical instruments while utilizing the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) app.

Background: Occupation-related noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) has both negative economic and quality of life implications. The risk spine surgeons undertake in regards to NIHL during operative intervention is unknown. Governing bodies, including the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, have recommended exposure limits not to exceed 85 decibels (dB) over 8 hours.
