Irradiation of condensed matter with ionizing radiation generally causes direct photoionization as well as secondary processes that often dominate the ionization dynamics. Here, large helium (He) nanodroplets with radius ≳ 40 nm doped with lithium (Li) atoms are irradiated with extreme ultraviolet (XUV) photons of energy hν ≥ 44.4 eV and indirect ionization of the Li dopants is observed in addition to direct photoionization of the He droplets.

Extreme Optical Chirality from Plasmonic Nanocrystals on a Mirror.

Nano Lett

January 2025

NanoPhotonics Centre, Cavendish Laboratory, Department of Physics, University of Cambridge, Cambridge CB3 0HE, United Kingdom.

Metal nanocrystals synthesized in achiral environments usually exhibit no chiroptical effects. However, by placing nominally achiral nanocrystals 1.3 nm above gold films, we find giant chiroptical effects, reaching anisotropy factors as high as ≈ 0.

Negative thermal expansion is known to exist in a range of structure types but is extremely rare in hexagonal perovskites. Here we demonstrate that BaIrO displays negative linear thermal expansion in the direction of its face-shared IrO trimers, and apparent zero volume thermal expansion below 100 K. We present evidence that this anomalous thermal expansion is driven by an unusual form of rigid body phonon behaviour governed by the effective trimer valence state and therefore has structural and electronic components to the underlying mechanism.

Observing non-Hermiticity induced chirality breaking in a synthetic Hall ladder.

Light Sci Appl

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Advanced Optical Communication Systems and Networks, School of Physics and Astronomy, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, 200240, China.

Non-Hermitian topological photonics plays a key role in bridging topological matter with gain and loss engineering in optics. Here we report the experimental observation of the break of chiral currents in a Hall ladder from the non-Hermiticity by constructing synthetic frequency dimension in two rings, where currents on both legs of the ladder co-propagate in the same direction. The origin of such phenomena is resulted from the interplay between the effective magnetic flux and the on-site gain and loss.

is a Gram-negative bacterium that thrives in extreme acidic conditions. It has emerged as a key player in biomining and bioleaching technologies thanks to its unique ability to mobilize a wide spectrum of elements, such as Li, P, V, Cr, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, As, Mo, W, Pb, U, and its role in ferrous iron oxidation and reduction. catalyzes the extraction of elements by generating iron (III) ions in oxic conditions, which are able to react with metal sulfides.
