Objective: To evaluate the effects of Jinye Baidu Granule ( JYBDG), a traditional Chinese medicine compound prescription, on fetal growth and development with maternal active human cytomegalovirus infection.

Methods: A prospective, randomized and controlled trial was adopted during January 1996 to June 2002. From the pregnant women with an abnormal pregnant history, 240 cases were screened to be infected by human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) by enzyme-linked immunoabsorbent assay (ELISA) and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). They were assigned according to the random number table to two groups. The 122 cases in the treatment group were administrated with JYBDG, one package each time, three times a day for two continuous weeks, while the other 118 in the control group did not receive any treatment. The negative conversion rate of both HCMV-IgM and HCMV late mRNA, the positive rate of HCMV-DNA in placenta and the intrauterine transmission rate between the two groups were compared, and fetal growth and development in partial fetuses were also observed.

Results: The negative conversion rate of both HCMV-lgM and HCMV late mRNA, the positive rate of HCMV-DNA in placenta and the intrauterine transmission rate in the treatment group were 77. 05% (94/122), 48. 98% (48/98) and 21.74% (10/46) respectively, while those in the control group were 38. 14% (45/118), 67.50% (54/80) and 52.63% (20/38) respectively, all showing significant difference between the two groups (P<0. 01). Totally 35 normal infants and 11 abnormal infants were born in the treatment group, and the number in the control group was 20 and 18 respectively, and comparison between the two groups showed significant difference (P<0.01). Six months of child birth, the scores of both mental development index (MDI) and psychomotor development index (PDI) of infants were higher in the treatment group (20 cases) than those in the control group (20 cases), but there was no significant difference between the two groups (P>0.05).

Conclusion: JYBDG could decrease the intrauterine transmission of HCMV and is beneficial to fetal growth and development.

Background: The impact of ankyloglossia (tongue-tie) on breastfeeding outcomes may be overestimated and surgical treatment in newborns remains a controversial topic. The aim of the present study was to assess and quantify the impact of ankyloglossia in newborns on breastfeeding self-efficacy at 14 days of life.

Methods: A birth cohort study was conducted involving mothers and newborns soon after childbirth at a public hospital in the city of Canoas, southern Brazil.

Background: This study aimed to investigate the risk factors related to the failure of initial combined local methotrexate (MTX) treatment and minimally invasive surgery for late cesarean scar pregnancy (CSP).

Methods: This retrospective case-control study was conducted between January 2016 and December 2023, involving patients with late CSP (≥ 8 weeks) who received local MTX injection combined with either hysteroscopic or laparoscopic surgery. Cesarean scar pregnancy was classified as type I, II, or III based on the direction of growth of the gestational sac and the residual myometrial thickness as assessed by ultrasound.

The snub-nosed, reclining, and serene image of the fetus is commonplace in cultural representations and analyses of obstetric ultrasound. Yet following the provocation of various feminist scholars, taking the fetal sonogram as the automatic object of concern vis-à-vis ultrasound cedes ground to anti-abortionists, who deploy fetal images to argue that life begins at conception and that the unborn are rights bearing subjects who must be protected. How might feminists escape this analytical trap, where discussions of ultrasonics must always be engaged in the act of debunking? This article orients away from the problem of fetal representation by employing a method which may appear to be wildly unsuitable: media archaeology.

Unlabelled: While previous research has established correlations between pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI), late-pregnancy blood glucose, and late-pregnancy blood lipid levels during pregnancy and offspring's physical development, the underlying mechanism of their interaction remains elusive. A birth cohort study was conducted on pregnant women, who are biologically female, delivering at a tertiary hospital in Wuhan City between May 2023 and April 2024, encompassing 1620 participants. We collected maternal socio-demographic data through questionnaires and obtained information on fasting blood glucose (FPG), lipid levels during the third trimester, and neonatal physical development from medical records.

Investigating the genetic factors influencing human birth weight may lead to biological insights into fetal growth and long-term health. We report analyses of rare variants that impact birth weight when carried by either fetus or mother, using whole exome sequencing data in up to 234,675 participants. Rare protein-truncating and deleterious missense variants are collapsed to perform gene burden tests.
