We analyze the decay of classically chaotic quantum systems in the presence of fast ballistic escape routes on the Ehrenfest time scale. For a continuous excitation process, the form factor of the decay cross section deviates from the universal random-matrix result on the Heisenberg time scale, i.e., for times much larger than the time for ballistic escape. We derive an exact analytical description and compare our results with numerical simulations for a dynamical model.

A common type of cytoskeletal morphology involves multiple microtubules converging with their minus ends at the microtubule organizing center (MTOC). The cargo-motor complex will experience ballistic transport when bound to microtubules or diffusive transport when unbound. This machinery allows for sequestering and subsequent dispersal of dynein-transported cargo.

A key challenge underlying the design of miniature machines is encoding materials with time- and space-specific functional behaviors that require little human intervention. Dissipative processes that drive materials beyond equilibrium and evolve continuously with time and location represent one promising strategy to achieve such complex functions. This work reports how internal nonequilibrium states of liquid crystal (LC) emulsion droplets undergoing chemotaxis can be used to time the delivery of a chemical agent to a targeted location.

Some quadrupeds have evolved the ability of pronking, which consists in leaping by extending the four limbs simultaneously. Pronking is typically observed in some ungulate species inhabiting grassland populated by obstacles such as shrubs, rocks and fallen branches scattered across the environment. Several possible explanations have been proposed for this peculiar behaviour, including the honest signalling of the fitness of the individual to predators or the transmission of a warning alert to conspecifics, but so far none of them has been advocated as conclusive.

A very quick decision enables hunting archerfish to secure downed prey even when they are heavily outnumbered by competing other surface-feeding fish. Based exclusively on information that is taken briefly after the onset of prey motion, the fish select a rapid C-start that turns them right towards the later point of catch. Moreover, the C-start, and not later fin strokes, already lends the fish the speed needed to arrive at just the right time.

Kinetics of dilute heterogeneous traffic on a two-lane road is formulated in the framework of Ben-Naim-Krapivsky model and stationary state properties are analytically derived in the asymptotic limit. The heterogeneity is introduced into the model as a quenched disorder in desired speeds of vehicles. The two-lane model assumes that each vehicle or platoon in a lane moves ballistically until it approaches a slow-moving vehicle or platoon and then joins it.
