Long-time behavior and different shear regimes in quenched binary mixtures.

The dependence on applied shear of the morphological and rheological properties of diffusive binary systems after a quench from the disordered state into the coexistence region is investigated. In particular the behavior of the late-time transversal size of domains L_{y} and of the maximum of excess viscosity (Deltaeta)_{M} is considered. Numerical results show the existence of two regimes corresponding to weak and strong shear separated by a shear rate of the order of gamma_{c} approximately 1t_{D} where t_{D} is the diffusive time. L_{y} and (Deltaeta)_{M} behave as L_{y} approximately gamma;{-alpha} and (Deltaeta)_{M} approximately gamma;{nu} with alpha=alpha_{s}=0.18+/-0.02 , nu=nu_{s}=-2.00+/-0.01 and alpha=alpha_{w}=0.25+/-0.01 , nu=nu_{w}=-0.68+/-0.04 in the strong- and weak-shear regimes, respectively. Differently from what was found in systems with fluctuating velocity field, it is confirmed that domains continue to grow at all times.

A central paradigm of nonequilibrium physics concerns the dynamics of heterogeneity and disorder, impacting processes ranging from the behavior of glasses to the emergent functionality of active matter. Understanding these complex mesoscopic systems requires probing the microscopic trajectories associated with irreversible processes, the role of fluctuations and entropy growth, and the timescales on which nonequilibrium responses are ultimately maintained. Approaches that illuminate these processes in model systems may enable a more general understanding of other heterogeneous nonequilibrium phenomena, and potentially define ultimate speed and energy cost limits for information processing technologies.

This paper extends the concept of epitropy, as introduced in previous work, to capture the effects of extreme tail behavior arising naturally over very long time and large space scales. Epitropy has some qualities that parallel entropy, although it is not quite the same. Its function is to capture the effects of a probability distribution function (PDF) having only a finite populated domain, which was introduced to eliminate divergent moment integrals.

Cycling through four or more states can provide specific dynamics, such as the spatial coexistence of multiple phases. However, transient dynamics have only been studied by previous theoretical models, since absorbing transition into a uniform phase covered by a single state occurs in the long-time limit.
