Life form, endemism, conservation status, and horticultural interest are detailed for orchid species associated to shade coffee-plantations in Mexico. About 11% of the orchid taxa (214 species) found in these agroecosystems are in the Mexican list of species requiring some form of protection. Almost 40% of the species are of horticultural interest. The importance of promoting shaded coffee plantations as an alternative to the conservation of primary plant communities in Mexican and other tropical regions is clear. Long term management plans are recommended.

Spatiotemporal distribution of organochlorine pesticides in the upper La Antigua watershed, Veracruz Mexico.

Sci Rep

October 2024

Ecología Funcional, Inst. de Ecología A.C, Carretera Antigua a Coatepec 351 Congregación El Haya, Xalapa, 091300, Veracruz, México.

Even though the use of organochlorine pesticides has been prohibited since the last century their presence is still being recorded around the world. In the upper La Antigua watershed, Veracruz, Mexico we have reported concentrations of these contaminants in different compartments of the riverine ecosystems. This is of relevance due to their potential disruptive endocrine effect on the vertebrates drinking the water or feeding in the riverine area.

Does the diversity of vegetation and diatoms correlate with soil and water factors in a tropical cloud forest's complex land use/land cover scenario?

Environ Monit Assess

September 2024

Red de Ecoetología, Instituto de Ecología, A.C. Carretera Antigua a Coatepec No. 351, El Haya, Xalapa, Veracruz, CP 91073, México.

Soil and water characteristics in micro basins with different land uses/land cover (LULC) can influence riparian vegetation diversity, stream water quality, and benthic diatom diversity. We analyzed 18 streams in the upper part of the La Antigua River basin, México, surrounded by cloud forests, livestock pastures, and coffee plantations. Concentrations of P, C, and N were elevated in the humus of forested streams compared to other land uses.

The relative importance of allochthonous and autochthonous carbon (C) as sources of energy for tropical stream food webs remains an open question. Allochthonous C might be the main energy source for small and shaded forest streams, while autochthonous C is more likely to fuel food webs draining land uses with less dense vegetation. We studied food webs in cloud forest streams draining watersheds with forests, coffee plantations, and pastures.

The use of phosphate-solubilizing fungi in coffee cultivation is an alternative to the use of traditional fertilizers. The objective of this study was to analyze the mechanisms involved in the phosphorus solubilization of fungal strains and to evaluate the effect of a phosphate-solubilizing strain on coffee plants. For this, phosphorus-solubilizing fungal strains were selected for evaluation of their solubilization potential and phosphatase activity.

Chemical analysis and NIR spectroscopy in the determination of the origin, variety and roast time of Mexican coffee.

Heliyon

August 2023

Colegio de Postgraduados Campus-Córdoba. km 348 carretera federal Córdoba-Veracruz, Col. Manuel León, Amatlán de los Reyes, Veracruz, 94946, Mexico.

Coffee is a product whose quality and price are associated with its geographical, genetic and processing origin; therefore, the development of analytical techniques to authenticate the above mentioned is important to avoid adulteration. The objective of this study was to compare conventional analytical methods with NIR technology for the authentication of roasted and ground coffee samples from different producing regions in Mexico (origins) and different varieties. A second objective was to determine, under the same processing conditions, if roasting times can be differentiated by using this technology.
