Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia, and it is strongly related to atrial enlargement. Metabolic syndrome (MetSyn) is associated with increased cardiovascular morbility and mortality. However, the impact of the MetSyn on cardiac arrhythmias is poorly elucidated. The aim of this study was to compare atrial dimensions in patients suffering from nonvalvular paroxysmal AF, with and without MetSyn, trying to identify structural differences that could favor the occurrence of this arrhythmia. The study population consisted of 60 patients who presented with at least 1 episode of paroxysmal AF. From these, 26 patients fulfilled the criteria of the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP-ATP III) definition of MetSyn, while the remaining 34 patients did not. Left atrial size was assessed by 2-dimensional echocardiography. Patients with MetSyn had a mean atrial size of 46.2 -/+ 4.3 mm and those without MetSyn had a mean atrial size of 41.6 -/+ 1.9 mm, p < 0.011. MetSyn may favor the occurrence of paroxysmal AF by increasing atrial size. This concept deserves more research.

Robust preclinical models of asymmetric ventricular loading in late gestation reflecting conditions such as hypoplastic left heart syndrome are lacking. We characterized the morphometry and microvascular function of the hypoplastic left ventricle (LV) and remaining right ventricle (RV) in a sham-controlled late gestation fetal lamb model of impaired left ventricular inflow (ILVI). Singleton fetuses were instrumented at ∼120 days gestational age (dGA; term is ∼147 days) with vascular catheters, an aortic flow probe and a deflated left atrial balloon.

Objective: The investigators sought to reanalyze previously published vertebral heart size (VHS) reference intervals in Yorkshire Terriers (YTs), Pomeranians (POMs), Pugs, and Boston Terriers (BTs).
Methods: The electronic medical records of IDEXX Telemedicine Consultants were searched for YTs, POMs, Pugs, and BTs undergoing radiography between January 1, 2023, and March 31, 2023. Dogs were included if they had 2- or 3-view thoracic radiographs performed and no evidence of cardiopulmonary or systemic disease.

Background: Silent brain infarctions (SBI) are commonly detected in brain imaging. The association of SBI with rheumatic mitral stenosis (MS) is not clearly relevant. Based on magnetic resonance imaging, we aimed to describe the prevalence of SBI in patients with rheumatic MS and the cardiac abnormalities related to their occurrence.

In this study, we used an in vivo swine model (10 healthy and 5 with chronic myocardial infarct) for ventricular PFA, collecting intracardiac electrograms, electro-anatomical maps, native T1-weighted and late gadolinium enhancement MRI, gross pathology, and histology. We used 1000-1500 V pulses, with 1-16 pulse trains to vary PFA dose.

Introduction The study aimed to retrospectively evaluate the early patient outcome and left ventricular function after mitral valve replacement with a tilting disc valve and total preservation. Patients and methods This retrospective observational study includes patients who underwent mitral valve replacement using a tilting disc valve with total preservation of mitral valvular and subvalvular apparatus from July 2021 to August 2022 at a single center. Results The data were reviewed retrospectively for age, sex, comorbidities, operating time, aortic cross-clamp time, cardiopulmonary bypass time, preoperative and postoperative left ventricular ejection fraction, mean gradient across the mitral valve, left ventricular diameter, left atrial size, atrial fibrillation, complications, mortality, and early patient outcome.
