Published: May 2007

Background: The occurrence of the disturbances of oropharyngeal phases of swallowing in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) patients has been well documented.

The Aim Of Study: Assessment of the oesophageal manometry for detection of the oesophageal phase of swallowing in ALS patients.

Material And Methods: The study was carried out in 12 dysphagic ALS patients and 10 sex- and age- matched healthy volunteers.

Results: The mean upper oesophageal contractile: amplitude, duration and velocity during the wet and dry swallows in ALS individuals were statistically differ as compared to control subjects. The abnormalities of vocal folds function was also found in the fiberoscopy examination of larynx in all ALS patients.

Conclusions: This study reveal the occurrence of disturbances of the oesophageal phase of swallowing in ALS patients with dysphagia.

Effects of Capsaicin on Masticatory and Swallowing Function.

J Oral Rehabil

January 2025

Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Graduate School of Medicine, Nippon Medical School, Tokyo, Japan.

Introduction: Recent studies have shown that capsaicin improves the pharyngeal swallowing reflex. However, the mechanism by which capsaicin alters mastication and oesophageal function remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effects of capsaicin on masticatory and oesophageal function.

: To compare tracheal temperature (T) with nasopharyngeal temperature (T) in patients undergoing cardiac surgery using cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). : T was measured using a thermistor in the cuff of an endotracheal tube and T was monitored using an esophageal stethoscope. Depending on the management of the CPB strategy, the operation was divided into four periods (pre-CPB, cooling, rewarming, and post-CPB).

Background: PD-L1 and VEGF blockade with atezolizumab plus bevacizumab has been shown to improve survival in unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma. TIGIT is an immune checkpoint regulator implicated in many cancers, including unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma. Here, we evaluate the clinical activity and safety of the addition of tiragolumab, an anti-TIGIT monoclonal antibody, to atezolizumab plus bevacizumab.

Introduction: We assessed potential mechanisms behind the requirement for more frequent dupilumab dosing in eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) compared with other approved indications.

Methods: Results for the phase 3 LIBERTY EoE TREET study coprimary endpoints (proportion of patients achieving a peak intraepithelial eosinophil count of ≤6 eosinophils per high-power field and absolute change from baseline in Dysphagia Symptom Questionnaire total score) were pooled in exposure-response analyses.

Results: A steep initial relationship then plateau was observed between higher dupilumab steady-state trough concentrations and decreased eosinophilic infiltration at week 24, whereas a graded exposure-response relationship was observed for symptomatic improvement at week 24.

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is a prevalent and highly lethal malignancy in Asia. Recent advancements in immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have markedly transformed the systemic therapy landscape for ESCC. Anti-PD-1-based combination with chemotherapy or with ipilimumab, an anti-CTLA-4 antibody, have been established as the new standard first-line treatments for patients with advanced ESCC.
