Sludge production was reduced remarkably by reducing the dissolved oxygen supply to less than 1 mg/l in the conventional wastewater treatment procedure of a food-processing factory that produced 180 m(3) of wastewater of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) of about 1,000 mg/l daily. DNA was extracted from the sludge and subjected to PCR amplification. The PCR product was cloned into a plasmid and sequenced. Estimation of the resident bacterial distribution by 16S rDNA sequences before and after improvement of the system suggested a remarkable gradual change in the major bacterial population from Anaerolinaeceae (15.6%) to Comamonadaceae (52.3%), members of denitrifying bacteria of Proteobacteria. Although we did not directly confirm the ability of denitrification of the resulting sludge, a change in the major final electron acceptors from oxygen to nitrate might explain the reduction in sludge production in a conventional activated sludge process when the oxygen supply was limitted.

The disposal of municipal solid waste (MSW) is a significant source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. As incineration becomes the primary method of MSW disposal in China, MSW incineration (MSWI) plants are expected to play a crucial role in mitigating GHG emissions in the waste sector. This study estimated the quarterly GHG emissions from two representative MSWI plants in Qingdao using a life-cycle assessment (LCA) approach.

The Effect of Biochar on Tomato () Cultivar Micro-Tom Grown under Continuous Light.

J Soil Sci Plant Nutr

November 2024

Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Swansea University, Swansea, Wales SA2 8PP UK.

Unlabelled: Continuous lighting (CL) has the potential to increase crop yield in greenhouse production. Tomato plants, however, when exposed to CL develop inter-vascular chlorosis, a leaf injury which causes a reduction in chlorophyll content and necrosis. The application of biochar can reduce physiological stress in plants, we examine if biochar also reduces necrosis in tomatoes when grown under CL.

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of North China Crop Improvement and Regulation, Key Laboratory of Ecological Environment of Farmland in Hebei, College of Resources and Environmental Sciences, Hebei Agricultural University, Baoding 071000, China.

To clarify the characteristics of Cd, As, and Pb concentrations in edible parts of crops and farmland soils, a key farmland survey was conducted on the field scale to investigate the characteristics of Cd, As, and Pb in soil and chili pepper (edible parts in the above-ground section) and sweet potato (edible parts under the ground) and assess the health risk of Cd-As-Pb in edible parts of chili pepper and sweet potato to humans in the typical co-contaminated agricultural soils by Cd, As, and Pb from metal smelting and sewage irrigation in North China. The results showed that the agricultural soil from chili pepper and sweet potato fields was co-contaminated by Cd and As at a moderate pollution level. The combined pollution index (2.

Compared to the laboratory preparation of biochar, there is less research on the adsorption of antibiotics by industrial production of biochar in water. In this study, three types of industrial production biochar (peanut shell biochar, sludge biochar, and perishable waste biochar) were selected, and their adsorption performance for tetracycline in composite-polluted water was systematically studied. The results indicated that the Freundlich equation could well fit the adsorption isotherms of the three types of biochar for tetracycline.

[NO Generation, Key Influencing Factors, and Emission Reduction Strategies of AO Process in Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant].

Huan Jing Ke Xue

January 2025

National Engineering Laboratory of Urban Sewage Advanced Treatment and Resource Utilization Technology, Faculty of Architecture, Civil and Transportation Engineering, Beijing University of Technology, Beijing 100124, China.

To achieve non-carbon dioxide greenhouse gas emission reduction and control in municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), this study conducted one-year long-term monitoring of nitrous oxide (NO) in the anaerobic-anoxic-aerobic (AO) process of a large-scale municipal wastewater treatment plant in Beijing. The experimental results showed that the anaerobic and anoxic zones of the AO process could effectively remove dissolved NO contained in the return sludge, while the aerobic zone was the main area for NO generation and emission, and its generation pathway may have been dominated by ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) denitrification. A significant difference was observed between winter and summer NO production, and the difference in the average NO release flux was up to 7.
