Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the in vitro effects of an ethanolic extract of propolis on the growth and adherence of Acanthamoeba castellanii trophozoites and cysts.
Methods: The effect of propolis with concentrations of 8.0, 6.0, 5.0, 4.0, 3.0, and 2.0 mg/mL on the proliferation of A. castellanii trophozoites, and with a concentration of 62.25, 31.25, 15.62, 7.81, 3.90, 1.95, and 0.97 mg/mL on the proliferation of A. castellanii cysts, at 1, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, and 72 h were examined in vitro.
Results: After 1-72 h, incubation in concentrations between 2.0 and 6.0 mg/mL, its effect was amoebistatic; at concentrations of 8.0 mg/mL and higher, its effect was amoebicidal. After 48 h or longer incubation times at 15.62 mg/mL and at higher concentrations, the propolis extract was cysticidal. At concentrations of 1.97 mg/mL or lower, there was no observable effect at any time point.
Conclusions: These findings indicate that ethanolic extract of propolis has amoebicidal, as well as cysticidal, properties for Acanthamoeba trophozoites and cysts. Propolis alone, or in combination with other amoebicidal agents, may be used in clinical practice after further investigations.

The increasing concern over microbial resistance to conventional antimicrobial agents used in food preservation has led to growing interest in plant-derived antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) as alternative solutions. In this study, the antimicrobial mechanisms of chia seed-derived peptides YACLKVK, KLKKNL, KLLKKYL, and KKLLKI were investigated against Staphylococcus aureus (SA) and Escherichia coli (EC). Fluorometric assays and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) demonstrated that the peptides disrupt bacterial membranes, with propidium iodide (PI) uptake reaching 72.

This work examined the effects of molecular weight (2-15 kDa) and concentration (10-30 mg/mL) of chitosan (CTS) on the binding capacity and interface behavior between octenyl succinic acid sodium starch (OSS) and CTS, as well as their effects on the storage stability of emulsions. The results of the isothermal calorimetry titration demonstrated that OSS and CTS were complexed by electrostatic interaction and spontaneous hydrogen bonding driven by enthalpy (ΔH from -3931 to -7983 cal/mol, ΔS from -38.5 to -49.

This study aimed to examine the extraction of specific phenolic compounds from blackthorn using ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) and to evaluate the influence of UAE on the phenolic composition, bioaccessibility, and cytotoxic effect evaluated on ovarian cancer (OVCAR-3 and SKOV-3) and healthy (HaCaT) cell lines. The UAE parameters were optimized by modeling with the response surface method. Temperature, time, and ultrasound amplitude were utilized to determine the optimal extraction conditions.

Researchers have repurposed several existing anti-inflammatory drugs as potential antifungal agents in recent years. So, this study aimed to investigate the effects of anti-inflammatory drugs on the growth, biofilm formation, and expression of genes related to morphogenesis and pathogenesis in Candida albicans. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of anti-inflammatory drugs was assessed using the broth microdilution method.
