A new family of paraxial laser beams that form an orthogonal basis is discussed. When propagated in uniform space, these beams preserve their structure to scale. The intensity distribution profile for such beams is similar to that for the Bessel modes, representing a set of alternating bright and dark concentric rings. The complex amplitude of these beams is proportional to the degenerate (confluent) hypergeometric function, and therefore we term such beams hypergeometric (HyG) modes. The HyG modes are generated with a liquid-crystal microdisplay.

Background: The influence of prebiotics and probiotics on oral microbiome composition, addressing dysbiosis, and aiding in the regulation of the immune-inflammatory response has recently been discussed. The objective of this scoping review is to explore current literature that examines the use of prebiotics and probiotics as adjunctive therapy for the treatment of periodontal disease with the intent to identify gaps in the literature to inform future research and dental hygiene practice.
Methods: This review was conducted from December 2022 to August 2023 using the Arksey and O'Malley approach and PRISMA-ScR guidelines.

In an open randomized controlled trial, we compared one vial (10 mL) to two vials (20 mL) of EchiTAb-plus-ICP (EPI) antivenom among children with systemic carpet viper (Echis romani) envenoming of moderate severity in northeastern Nigeria. Systemic envenoming, presenting with incoagulable blood, was diagnosed using the 20-minute whole blood clotting test (20WBCT). Eligible patients with positive 20WBCT whose guardians assented were recruited and randomly allocated to receive either one vial or two vials of EPI administered either as a bolus or as a slow continuous infusion.

The advent of acute respiratory coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is convoyed by the shedding of the virus in stool. Although inhalation from person-to-person and aerosol/droplet transmission are the main modes of SARS-Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) transmission, currently available evidence indicates the presence of viral RNA in the sewerage wastewater, which highlights the need for more effective corona virus treatment options. In the existing COVID-19 pandemic, a substantial percentage of cases shed SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA in their faeces.

Background: This article describes the development of an oral hygiene self-care behaviour change intervention (Safeguard Your Smile [SYS]) for Punjabi immigrant adults, using the Behaviour Change Wheel (BCW) theoretical framework.
Methods: The 3 stages and 8 steps of the BCW were followed to develop the face-to-face SYS intervention. Identification of the problem in behavioural terms was enabled by referring to the results of a qualitative focus group (FG) previously conducted by the research team.

Background: Hepatitis A virus (HAV) and hepatitis E virus (HEV) have enteric modes of transmission and are common causes of acute hepatitis in low- and middle-income countries. HEV is also characterised as a zoonotic infection and is prevalent in high-income countries. Data on HAV and HEV prevalence in Suriname, a middle-income country in South America, are scarce.
