Background: Hydroxyethyl starch (HES) is widely used as a plasma substitute for improving microcirculation. A major side effect of HES is severe pruritus caused by HES deposits in the skin. Since specific changes are difficult to see in paraffin sections, electron microscopy is the golden standard technique in the diagnosis of HES-induced skin disease. Our aim was to compare electron microscopic search for HES deposits with other techniques.
Patients And Methods: During the last ten years, we biopsied 21 patients suspected of having HES-induced pruritus. We compared conventional microscopy with hematoxylin & eosin and toluidine blue-stained paraffin sections, toluidine blue-stained glycide ether-embedded, semithin sections and transmission electron microscopy.
Results: In 9 patients specific HES deposits could be found by evaluating toluidine blue stained semithin sections by light microscopy alone. In 6 of these cases electron microscopy was also done and confirmed the findings. In contrast, no specific findings due to HES deposits could be detected by conventional histology.
Conclusions: If specific HES deposits are found in toluidine blue-stained, glycide ether-embedded semithin sections, electron microscopy is not required.

The formation of superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) filaments has been implicated in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Although the disulfide bond formed between Cys57 and Cys146 in the active state has been well studied, the role of the reduced cysteine residues, Cys6 and Cys111, in SOD1 filament formation remains unclear. Urinary tract infections are among the most common nosocomial infections, with the majority being catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs). This study demonstrated that an antimicrobial and antibiofilm urinary catheter containing zinc oxide-carbon nanotubes (ZnO-CNT) can inhibit CAUTIs in patients. ZnO-CNT polymers were synthesized by mixing ZnO and CNT using a high-shear mixer, and the synthesized ZnO-CNT polymers were incorporated into a silicone matrix to produce a ZnO-CNT urinary catheter.

Tetramethylpyrazine (TMP) is a compound known for its natural health benefits, but current detection methods for TMP are overly expensive and time-consuming. Investigate the impact of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) using different photosensitizers (PSs) such as indocyanine green (IG), curcumin (CC), and methylene blue (MB), with or without intracanal application of calcium hydroxide (CH), on the push-out bond strength of glass-fiber posts (GFPs) to intraradicular dentin, the chemical composition of the root substrate, and the sealing of the adhesive interface across different thirds of intraradicular dentin. A total of 112 bovine teeth underwent biomechanical preparation and were divided into eight experimental groups (n = 14 each): Negative control with deionized water; positive control with deionized water + CH; IG group with indocyanine green and infrared laser; IG + CH group; CC group with curcumin and blue LED; CC + CH group; MB group with methylene blue and red laser; and MB + CH group. The push-out bond strength was measured using a universal testing machine (n = 8), and scanning electron microscopy characterized the fracture patterns.
