The ability to identify classically secreted proteins is an important component of targeted therapeutic studies and the discovery of circulating biomarkers. Here, we review some of the most recent programs available for the in silico prediction of secretory proteins, the performance of which is benchmarked with an independent set of annotated human proteins. The description of these programs and the results of this benchmarking provide insights into the most recently developed prediction programs, which will enable investigators to make more informed decisions about which program best addresses their research needs.

Yu-Ping-Feng-San (YPF) is a famous classical Chinese medicine formula known for its ability to boost immunity. YPF has been applied to enhance the immune status of tumor patients in clinical practice. However, there is still a lack of research on its immune regulatory effects and mechanisms in the tumor microenvironment.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of two styles of classical music, based on different tempos (BPM), on the physiological and blood parameters of horses during social isolation and restriction of movements. First experiment was carried out using nine horses of no defined breed, distributed in Control, Slow-tempo music and Moderate-tempo music .For social isolation and restriction of movement, the animals were housed daily in individual stalls for two hours and exposed to the stimuli for 60 min, and eye temperature, heart rate, and respiratory rate were assessed.

Early detection of bacterial pneumonia by characteristic induced odor signatures.

BMC Infect Dis

December 2024

Department of Infectious Diseases and Hospital Epidemiology, University Hospital Zurich, University of Zürich, Zurich, 8097, Switzerland.

Introduction: The ability to detect pathogenic bacteria before the onsets of severe respiratory symptoms and to differentiate bacterial infection allows to improve patient-tailored treatment leading to a significant reduction in illness severity, comorbidity as well as antibiotic resistance. As such, this study refines the application of the non-invasive Secondary Electrospray Ionization-High Resolution Mass Spectrometry (SESI-HRMS) methodology for real-time and early detection of human respiratory bacterial pathogens in the respiratory tract of a mouse infection model.

Methods: A real-time analysis of changes in volatile metabolites excreted by mice undergoing a lung infection by Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pneumoniae were evaluated using a SESI-HRMS instrument.

The importance of collagen and elastin remains incompletely understood concerning tumor immunity in cancer tissues. This study explored the clinical significance of collagen and elastin deposition on tumor immunity in advanced colorectal cancer patients. The collagen and elastin contents were assessed simultaneously using elastic van Gieson (EVG) histochemical staining.

Background: Pain in people with cerebral palsy (CP) has been classically underestimated and poorly treated, particularly in individuals with impaired communication skills.

Objective: To analyze changes in different salivary metabolites and pain behavior scales after a painful procedure in adults with CP and adults with typical development.

Methods: Salivary levels of sTNF-α, sIgA, Cortisol, FRAP, ADA and Alpha Amylase, as well as 3 observational pain scales (Wong-Baker, Non-Communicating Adults Pain Checklist and Facial Action Coding System) were assessed before and after an intramuscular injection in 30 Individuals with CP and 30 healthy controls.
